Standoff Resolved Peacefully In Tinley: Police

Tinley police said no charges will be filed against a man who locked himself in a house, saying he had a crossbow and arrows.

TINLEY PARK, IL — An overnight standoff between police and a person barricaded inside a Tinley Park house has ended after hours of negotiations, officials said. Tinley Park Police Chief Matthew Walsh said the situation was resolved peacefully, and no charges are expected to be filed against a man who told authorities he had a crossbow and 12 arrows.

Tinley Park police alerted residents that the man had barricaded himself in a house on the 6500 block of 163rd Place at 7:41 p.m. Sunday. Police communicated with residents nearby through Facebook and text messaging, telling them to stay in their homes and shelter in place. Authorities blocked off streets to limit access to the area.

Police said the man's mother requested a well-being check after the two argued and the son refused to let her into the home to collect her belongings. Escorted by police, the mother returned to the home, where the man refused to allow her or officers to enter.

Walsh said the man told authorities he had locked himself in his bedroom, where he had a crossbow and 12 arrows.

Walsh said police negotiated at length with the man, and agreed to bring him his dog and some resources to assist him in seeking help. The dog, Walsh said, helps to calm the man. Eventually, the man agreed he would seek treatment on Monday, and the standoff ended just before 2 a.m., police said.

Walsh said they did not believe the man would harm himself and is now safe. He said there was no violence during the incident and no crime committed.

"The important thing," Walsh said, "is that no one was hurt."
