Tinley Park Dentist Filed $1.2 Million In Fake Dental Loans: Feds

TINLEY PARK, IL — A south suburban dentist is facing federal fraud charges after officials said he received $1.2 million in medical care loans for dental work that was never performed.

According to federal charge documents, Michael Egan was charged Tuesday with one count of wire fraud. If convicted, the 58-year-old Orland Park native could face up to 20 years in prison.

Authorities said Egan had no plans to complete a slew of dental procedures he told a lending company he would from 2015 to 2016. The Tinley Park practice submitted applications to one lending company, officials did not disclose which, and would sometimes ask for more funds after fake additional dental work was needed.

Egan's patients were aware of the scheme, authorities said, and would receive a portion of the funds in exchange for Egan using their name and records to file the applications. A few other workers were also compensated for their work as "recruiters" in identifying patients who would participate in the fraud.

Court documents filed in the U.S. District Court in Chicago indicated Egan would be required to forfeit any money or assets he gained from the scheme. He is due back in court on Thursday.

Egan was still listed as working at a Tinley Park dental practice at 16345 South Harlem Ave. as of Tuesday.
