'We Need To Be Vigilant' About Domestic Violence: Letter

The recent shooting incident in Tinley Park in broad daylight at a grocery store shows us domestic violence can happen anywhere at any time. Domestic Violence is all about exerting power and control over another person, and although in many cases this is done secretly behind closed doors, more and more it is happening in public where it’s being witnessed by others. Unfortunately, there is never just one victim—others are often traumatized or hurt—and the presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of homicide by 500%.

The Crisis Center for South Suburbia has been supporting victims of domestic violence, including children and young adults for 43 years here in Tinley Park and the surrounding south suburban Cook County area. We work hard to help victims secure Orders of Protection and provide free counseling and shelter, and we open our arms to the community and anyone impacted by this recent or any domestic violence activity. As a community, we need to be vigilant and watch for signs of domestic violence. We need to be there when someone is in trouble before another life is lost or traumatized.
