Woman Faces Drunken Driving Charges After Reportedly Caught Cruisin' With Deployed Airbag

When police pulled over a woman last month and asked her why her airbags were deployed, she started to cry because she didn't know, they said.

When police approached a driver last month who they pulled over for speeding and swerving, they found that she'd been cruising down Oak Park Avenue with her side airbag deployed, they said.

Kendra M. Evans, 23, of the 14500 block of Normal Avenue in Riverdale, told police around 3 a.m. Nov. 13 that she was coming back from a bar in Chicago. They stopped her near the intersection of Oak Park Avenue and 183rd Street in for driving 42 in a 30 mph zone, swerving in her lane and stopping past a designated crosswalk, according to the report. 

When they asked her why her airbags were deployed, she began to cry, police said.

"I asked Kendra again what she may have hit and where," the report said. "Kendra turned to me and stated, 'I don't know.'" 

said there were no reports of a hit-and-run accident that night involving Evans' 2010 Nissan four-door. She was asked to perform field sobriety tests because officers said they could smell booze on her breath.

She reportedly failed those tests and was arrested. At 3:35 a.m., she blew a .171 on the Breathalyzer, according to the report. 

During an interview, she told police that she had been in Chicago with friends, where she took three or four shots of Jameson. Regarding the accident, she told them she thought she hit a pole but didn't know where. 

She was charged with speeding, improper lane use, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.08.
