Community Celebrates as Vernon Hills HS Cougars Place Second at State
Congratulations to the Vernon Hills High School varsity girls' basketball team on their second place win at the IHSA's state tournament Saturday!
The Vernon Hills High School community celebrated the impressive second place win of their varsity girls' basketball team at the Illinois High School Association's Class 3A state tournament at Redbird Arena in Normal on Saturday.
Although Quincy Notre Dame ultimately defeated the Cougars 62 to 45 in the championship game, the team enjoyed a satisfying win over Montini in the semifinals, reported the Lake County News-Sun.
The Cougars took down Montini in overtime on Friday, winning the game 48-45, reported the Chicago Tribune. Point guard Lauren Webb scored 21 points.

Many fans watched the game live on the Internet.
The Cougars were welcomed home Saturday night by more than 100 excited supporters, reported the New-Sun. VHHS also used its Facebook page to let residents know when the team was expected back, so they could meet and congratulate them.

“You guys had a great season. I probably had people from 10 different towns come up to me (at ISU) and tell me how classy the girls are,” said school principal Ellen Cwick to the team at the celebration. “You represented the community with a tremendous amount of class. We’re very proud of you.”
