Vernon Hills police are reminding residents to keep their garage doors locked after five garages were reported burglarized the evening of June 4.
Burglars entered unlocked garages in the New Century Town neighborhood and took items such as sunglasses, hats and navigation systems from the vehicles inside, Crime Prevention Officer Kim Christenson said.
"People should keep their overhead doors and service doors locked," he said. "In addition to investigational steps, we're putting the word out."
Reminders are being shared on the village's local access cable channel and will be distributed in Vernon Hills' weekly email blast and via the website, he said.
Residents with attached garages should particularly take precautions, Christenson said. "It also makes the homes themselves vulnerable if the door leading to the house is not locked," he said.
In addition, he said, no matter where they are parked, citizens should keep personal items in their vehicles out of sight.
