Vernon Hills Police Plan Car Shows

The five-time event would give residents a chance to show off their cars while raising money for charity.

When Vernon Hills Village President Roger Byrne heard that the police department is planning a summer car show fundraiser, he had just one question.

"We don't have to shave our heads, do we?" asked Byrne, who remains largely hairless following his participation in last month's St. Baldrick's Day fundraiser.

Byrne and others who want to keep their hair need not fear. The department's newest effort simply aims to give citizens a chance to show off their vehicles while raising money for local food pantries and Operation Stand Down.

The "Monday Motor Sports on Milwaukee" show will be held in a parking lot near Sears, which will sponsor the event. The show, scheduled to be held May 20, June 17, July 15, Aug. 26 and Sept. 23, will be run by off-duty police officers.

An officer who presented the plan during a committee of the whole meeting this week said it could include canned food and coat drives.

"It's really nice to see our department so involved in the community," said Trustee Thom Koch.

Patch will provide more information about the car shows as plans progress.
