WEST SIDE, IL —Police have identified a man they say shot and killed a father driving his daughter to school earlier this month. An arrest warrant has been issued for the teenager accused of being the gunman.

Avanta Ware, 18, is facing murder charges in connection with the Sept. 1 killing of 33-year-old Travell Miller while Miller waited in traffic with his 7-year-old daughter, according to Chicago police.

Police said Miller was parked in traffic the morning of Sept. 1 in the 3000 block of West Chicago Avenue with his daughter in the passenger seat when Ware got out of a nearby car, walked up and opened fire on the man. Miller was hit four times and pronounced dead on the scene.

The 7-year-old was uninjured because Miller bent over to protect her from the gunfire, his family told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Detectives shared photos of the shooter later that day and identified him as Ware weeks later. Authorities said Ware, who is also wanted in connection with two carjackings in Berwyn, was last seen driving a silver 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix with no license plates.

According to social media posts from Miller's family, Travell had just moved to the area days before the shooting. They had no idea why he would be targeted.
