WHEATON, IL — A Berwyn man who was out parole and was on bond and fired a gun at another motorist last fall is being held on $200,000 bond after he appeared in court in DuPage County Court on felony gun charges on Tuesday, officials said.

Keontae Evans, 20, is charged with one count of armed habitual criminal, two charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a firearm, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. The state was asking the court to be denied for Evans, but the judge set the bond at $200,000 with 10 percent to apply.

Evans originally appeared in court on Feb. 8. but was allowed a continuance to hire a private attorney.

Prosecutors said that Illinois State Police Troopers were called toa report of a single-car rollover crash on I-390 near Meacham Road on Nov 3. Troopers found Evans, who was reportedly a passenger in the vehicle and another individual, officials said.

Prosecutors believe the vehicle in which Evans was traveling was traveling east on I-390 and became involved in a road rage incident when another vehicle would not allow it to merge. Officials said that after the altercation, the vehicle in which Evans was traveling was behind the victim’s vehicle.

Police said that Evans pointed a gun out the front passenger side window and fired three to four times at the victim’s vehicle. Officials also said that Evans’ vehicle sped up to get in front of the victim and that Evans again pointed a gun out the window and fired three to four times, breaking a window on the victim’s vehicle.

Following the shooting, police said the victim’s car swerved toward Evans’ vehicle and struck it, causing it to veer off the road and that the victim continued to drive away, Berlin said.

“The outrageous conduct alleged against Mr. Evans is extremely serious and will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” Berlin said in a news release on Tuesday. “In addition to allegedly shooting at another motorist, his alleged actions endangered the life not only of his intended target and the passengers in his vehicle, but also the lives of the motoring public.”

Evans is scheduled to again appear in court on March 22 for arraignment and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
