85 NTHS Students Studied Abroad This Summer

This summer, 85 students participated in travel abroad programs around the world. Students participating in the Summer School foreign travel opportunities participated in programs in Peru, China, Japan, Germany, France and India. Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Tim Hayes presented a report on the program at last week's New Trier High School board meeting. 

Hayes noted that the school surveyed students and faculty members involved in the program. Many spoke of the curricular value of the trips, with language students noting, for example, that they grained a better grasp of the language and the culture they were studying. 

NTHS has a comprehensive process for approving trips through the Curriculum Council and Board of Education, with all trips requiring supervision by a faculty member and all trips must be run through reputable student travel companies. This is similar to how other districts handle travel opportunities. 

Some Board members raised concern about the cost of travel and asked whether fundraising or scholarships could help broaden the program so that more students could have the opportunity to travel. Hayes said he would look into the issue.
