Burglars Breach Businesses In Downtown Winnetka: Blotters
Romance scam and fake grant plan fool residents, store bans suspended staffer; Prius catalytic converters cut: New Trier Township Blotters

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
GLENCOE
INCIDENTS
A Bluff Street resident reported on Feb. 16 that someone had tried to deposit a check for nearly $139,000 in their Chase Bank account. The bank halted the fraudulent deposit and assigned a new account number to the resident.
FACEBOOK SCAM
A Green Bay Road resident reported on Feb. 16 that someone had scammed them into providing personal identifying information through a fake link to apply for a grant with the Department of Human Services. Someone contacted the resident and asked them to pay a $1,049 application fee before the resident became suspicious and learned that their friend's Facebook account that provided the fake link had been hacked.

IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Bluff Street resident reported on Feb. 17 that they had learned someone had forwarded their mail to another address upon their return from vacation.
- A Beach Road resident reported on Feb. 17 that someone had used your identity to open a Verizon Wireless account.
ARREST/CITATIONS
A 33-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 1:15 p.m. on Feb. 16 and charged with driving without a license and cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash near the intersection of Hohlfelder and Dundee roads.

INCIDENTS
CATALYTIC CONVERTOR THEFT
Between 7 p.m. Feb. 11 and 8:45 a.m. on Feb. 13, someone stole a catalytic converter from a Toyota Prius parked at 754 Elm St. in downtown Winnetka for a $3,600 loss.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone damaged the hood of a Land Rover SUV parked in the 800 block of Boal Parkway between 5 p.m. Feb. 11 and 9 a.m. on Feb. 12, causing an unknown amount of damage.
CHECK FRAUD
A Foxdale Avenue resident reported on Feb. 14 that someone had intercepted a check in the mail and altered it between Jan. 15 and Feb. 9. There was no financial loss reported.
COMMERCIAL BURGLARIES
- Someone got into a business at 990 Green Bay Road between midnight on Feb. 16 and 8 a.m. on Feb. 17, but it was not known if anything was stolen at the time of the report.
- Someone broke into the Winnetka Thrift Shop at 992 Green Bay Road around 3:22 a.m. on Feb. 17 and stole thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and cash. Police were notified later that morning. A burglar also got into the counseling center next door between 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 8 a.m. Feb. 17, though nothing was reported missing from inside.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Balint Kiss, 32, of the 1400 block of Caldwell Lane, Hoffman Estate, was arrested at the Winnetka Police Department on Feb. 15 on a pair of active arrest warrants, one of which was issued by Cook County authorities after he forfeited his bond while awaiting trial on charges relating to a Winnetka incident.

INCIDENTS
FRAUD
A Northfield Square resident reported on Feb. 15 that someone had scammed them into sending a wire transfer of about $12,000 to someone who had convinced them that they were in a romantic relationship and the money was needed for travel expenses to meet together. Police asked the FBI to intercept the funds.
STORE BAN
Management at Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, called police on the morning of Feb. 16 to reported that a recently suspended employee had showed up that morning at the grocery store and asked for help looking for a new job. The person left before police arrived, and store management asked police to notify him that he is banned from all Mariano's stores, which officers did via phone.

INCIDENTS
IDENTITY THEFT
A Sterling Road resident reported that someone had canceled their Citibank credit card and ordered a replacement card to be delivered to an address in Delray Beach, Florida, which was used to make several fraudulent charges before the resident contacted the bank to cancel the account.
WILMETTE
INCIDENTS
THREAT
Someone shouted and made violent threats to a person walking their dog in the 300 block of Skokie Boulevard at some point on Feb. 11.
HOME BURGLARY
Someone burglarized a home in the 400 block of Wilshire Drive East on or before Feb. 13. Police learned that the burglar may have gotten in through an unlocked door, and it was not known if anything was stolen at the time of the report.
PACKAGE THEFT
A thief stole a package from the front porch of a home in the 900 block of Chestnut Avenue on Feb. 13.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT
Someone stole a catalytic converter from a Toyota Prius that was parked in the 400 block of Ridge Road on Feb. 13.
VANDALISM
Two train cars parked at the Linden CTA Purple Line station at 349 Linden Ave. were defaced with spray-painted graffiti on Feb. 13.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Sheridan Road resident reported on Feb. 12 that someone had used their identity to open an unauthorized cell phone account.
- A Hartzell Street resident reported on Feb. 14 that someone had used their identity to fraudulently obtain a loan from the Small Business Administration.
- A Sunset Drive resident reported on Feb. 15 that someone had used their identity to open two unauthorized lines of credit.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Armando Covarrubias, 34, of the 2400 block of West 46th Street, Chicago, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct after police were told that he had propositioned them in the 1500 block of Sheridan Road on Feb. 12.
