NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

PACKAGE THEFT
A package that was supposed to contain a cellphone worth $689 showed up empty when it was delivered in the 800 block of Valley Road on the afternoon of Oct. 6, but the exterior of the shipping box did not appear to have been tampered with.

GIFT CARD SCAM VIA COMPUTER
An Oak Drive resident was scammed out of $1,400 after they called a number in an email regarding payment for a computer program. When the resident called the number, a person on the other line convinced them to buy Target gift cards and provide remote access to their computer.

HIT-AND-RUN, CAR BURGLARY
Around 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 15, a witness at Lake Shore Country Club, 1255 Sheridan Road, reported that a red Chevrolet Camero entered a parking lot. Two male occupants — one described as 5 feet, 5 inches and the other described as skinny — got out and began trying to open door handles of cars parked in the lot. They managed to get into one car but nothing was reported stolen from inside before getting back into the Camero and fleeing , striking a parked Hyundai on the way and causing $1,500 in damage.

LANDSCAPING THEFT
Someone stole 11 landscaping lightbulbs from a yard in the 100 block of Maple Hill Road between Sept. 15 and Oct. 16 for a loss of $440.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone burglarized a home in the 1100 block of Mayfair Lane between noon and 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 19, stealing jewelry and silverware after entering through an unlocked door.

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a 2016 Chevrolet Corvette valued at $44,000 while it was parked in the lot of Mini of Glencoe, 2100 Frontage Road, between 9 p.m. Oct. 23 and 8 a.m. Oct. 24.

FLEEING, ELUDING POLICE

  • Police were called to the 1000 block of Old Elm Lane around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 7 for a report that someone was trying to get into a locked parked car. Officers arrived to find a Volvo leaving the area, and when police tried to stop it, the driver fled north on Green Bay Road.
  • Around 1 a.m. on Oct. 25, an officer tried to pull over an Infiniti Q50 that had been reported stolen from Schaumburg six days earlier. The Infiniti sped away from the officer at Skokie Boulevard and Dundee Road and was last spotted entering the Edens Expressway south from Dundee Road.
  • Around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 24, a motorcyclist fled from an officer at Vernon Avenue and Dundee Road, with the motorcycle last seen headed southbound on Vernon Avenue from Dundee Road.
  • The driver of a red Chevrolet Camero fled from an officer who tried to pull over the car near the intersection of Oak Ridge Drive and Sunset Lane around 1 a.m. on Oct. 25. It was last seen headed south on the Edens Expressway from Tower Road.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Lincoln Avenue resident reported on the afternoon of Oct. 5 that someone had used their identity to open a Chase credit card.
  • An Edgebrook Lane resident reported on Oct. 10 that someone had used their identity to open up an American Express credit card.

ARRESTS

Robert Mauer, 55, of the 700 block of Broadview Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested around 1 p.m. on Oct. 4 and charged with theft for allegedly stealing a bicycle from the Glencoe train station the prior day.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

TICKET SCAM
A Lincoln Avenue resident reported on Oct. 4 that someone had scammed them out of $1,000 the prior day after offering to sell concert tickets via the online payment platform Zelle.

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a 2018 Volvo from the 1200 block of Cherry Street between 6:30 p.m. oct. 6 and 3:16 a.m. on Oct. 7. The car was found the next day in Broadview, with no damage estimate on loss available at the time of the report.

SHERIFF SCAM
Someone scammed a Hackberry Lane resident out of $2,400 by claiming to be a representative of the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department and claiming that the resident had failed to appear in court and needed to post bond via the online payment platform Zelle.

CHECK FRAUD
A Walden Road resident reported that someone intercepted a check, altered it and cashed it for an unspecified loss in excess of several thousand dollars.

TRAVEL AGENT SCAM
An Asbury Avenue resident was scammed out of an unspecified amount greater than several thousand dollars after someone purporting to be a travel agent had, on Oct. 6, convinced them to wire payment for a previously booked vacation. The resident reported it to police on Oct. 18.

LOCKER THEFT
Someone stole a watch worth $180 from an unlocked locker at New Trier High School, 385 Winnetka Ave., between 10:20 and 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 29, police were told on Oct. 18.

HALLOWEEN THEFTS

  • Someone stole $90 worth of Halloween decorations from the front lawn of a home in the 1100 block of Merrill Street between 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 and 8:15 a.m. on Oct. 10.
  • Someone stole $80 worth of Halloween decorations from the front lawn of a home in the 1100 block of Chatfield Road between 8 p.m. on Oct. 9 and 7:50 a.m. on Oct. 10.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • Someone used the identity of a Pelham Road resident to fraudulently apply for a loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration on or before Sept. 28.
  • Someone used the identity of an Elm Street resident to rent a U-Haul truck and apply for a Capital One credit card between Sept. 1 and Oct. 9.
  • Someone used more than $2,000 worth of American Airlines points belonging to a Hawthorn Lane resident on Oct. 7.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone got into an unlocked BMW in the 1200 block of Oak Street between 8:30 p.m. Oct. 13 and 4:30 a.m. Oct. 4 and stole $20 in cash from inside.
  • Someone stole a golf bag with clubs and various golf items from an unlocked Land Rover parked in the 200 block of Woodland Avenue between Sept. 27 and Sept. 30, police were told on Oct. 16.

ARRESTS

Donald J. Bigham, 66, was arrested around 7:45 a.m. on Oct. 10 in the 1000 block of Sheridan Road after officers on a wellbeing check found that he had seven active in-state arrest warrants. Police transferred him to the custody of the DuPage County Sheriff's Office.

A 53-year-old Chicago man was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and driving with an expired license following a traffic stop in the 900 block of Green Bay Road shortly before 5 a.m. on Oct. 16. He was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and using an electronic communication device while driving.

A 61-year-old Winnetka man was arrested around 10:15 p.m. on Oct. 17 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop in the 100 block of Green Bay Road. He was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane usage.

A 32-year-old Winnetka man was arrested around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 20 in the 800 block of Auburn Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failure to report an accident to police and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol.


NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

BATTERY
An employee at Fields Land Rover, 670 W. Frontage Road, reported on the afternoon of Oct. 5 that another employee had touched him without permission several times over the past week but he did not want to press charges.

FRAUD
Employees of a business located at 1622 Willow Road reported on Oct. 6 that someone had made several unauthorized overseas transactions over the past month, moving about $27,000 out of the business' bank account.

THREATS AT GROCERY STORE
Police were called to the Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, around 6:45 p.m. on Oct. 9 for a report of a disturbance between a shopper and a store staffer. By the time officers arrived, both were calm and neither sought to press charges against the other.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone damaged a work vehicle parked in the loading zone of the New Trier High School west campus, 7 S. Happ Road, between 6 and 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 7.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Hibbard Road resident reported on Oct. 11 that someone had taken out a $150,000 loan in their name back in 2021.

CHECK FRAUD
A Winnetka Road resident reported on Oct. 11 that, about three weeks earlier, a couple of unauthorized checks worth about $2,850 each had been forged from one of their bank accounts, with another fraudulent electronic payment made from their account for $1,200.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON
Police were called to Temple Am Yisrael, 4 S. Happ Road, on the evening of Oct. 13 after someone parked on the property and walked up to the front door asking for directions and to use the phone. An employee provided directions but did not let him inside to use a phone, and he had left before officers arrived.

BANK FRAUD
A North Happ Road resident reported on Oct. 19 that someone had made an unauthorized transaction of about $2,000 out of their bank account during the prior day.

THEFT

  • Someone stole a possibly unlocked bicycle from the rack at New Trier High School, 7 S. Happ Road, between 7:50 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 2.
  • A resident in the 1900 block of Old Willow Road reported on the morning of Oct. 5 that someone might have stolen about $350 worth of audiovisual equipment from their house at some point in the few months prior.
  • Someone stole an unlocked bicycle from the bike rack at New Trier High School, 7 S. Happ Road, between 7:30 and 10 p.m. on Oct. 6.
  • Someone stole a possibly unlocked bicycle from the bike rack at New Trier High School, 7 S. Happ Road, between 3:30 p.m. Oct. 6 and 1 p.m. Oct. 7.

KENILWORTH

INCIDENTS

BIKE THEFT
Someone stole two unlocked bicycles from the driveway of a home in the 600 block of Ridge Road between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 for a total loss of $800.

IDENTITY THEFT

  • A Cummings Avenue resident reported on Oct. 14 that someone had used their identity to fraudulently obtain four online loans totaling $5,200 from the lender Bread Pay.
  • A Robsart Lane resident reported on Oct. 19 that someone had fraudulently used their identity to apply for a Capital One loan on Oct. 10.

WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

THEFTS
A Forest Avenue resident reported on Oct. 1 that they lost their wallet and someone had used it to make numerous unauthorized purchases.

CHECK FRAUD
A Birchwood Lane resident reported on Oct. 4 that someone had intercepted a check in the mail, altered it and cashed it without authorization.

SHOPLIFTING
Someone stole five bottles of liquor from the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 7, police were told.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone broke into a home in the 2800 block of Blackhawk Road between 9:15 and 11 a.m. on Oct. 13 by prying open a sliding door. Several rooms were ransacked and jewelry and silverware were reported stolen.

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a Honda CRV from the 700 block of Greenleaf Avenue between 1 a.m. Oct. 14 and 2 a.m. Oct. 15. The owners told police they were missing their keys. The car was found crashed an abandoned at 2:30 a.m. Oct. 15 at in the southbound lanes of Interstate 90 at Keeler Avenue in Chicago.

STOLEN BICYCLES

  • Someone stole a Trek bicycle worth $650 from the 800 block of Linden Avenue between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Oct. 16.
  • Someone stole a locked Giant bicycle valued at $1,000 from the CTA Purple Line station, 340 Linden Ave., between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 16.
  • Someone stole a locked e-bike valued at $2,000 from the Metra Station, 722 Green Bay Road, around 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 16.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Greenwood Avenue resident reported on Oct. 3 that someone had opened a credit card account using their identity.
  • An Elmwood Avenue resident reported on Oct. 11 that someone had used their identity to buy an AC unit and gas furnace worth more than $9,000.
  • Someone used the identity of a Forest Avenue resident to withdraw over $19,000 from their bank account on the morning of Oct. 11.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone got into an unlocked Kia in the 700 block of Washington Avenue on or before Oct. 1.
  • Someone stole six pairs of sunglasses worth a combined $1,200, as well as a $500 watch, from an unlocked Volkswagen parked in the 200 block of Central Avenue during the night of Oct. 11 or morning of Oct. 12.
  • During the night of Oct. 11 or morning of Oct. 12, someone stole a pair of sunglasses and some change with a total value of $50 from an unlocked BMW parked in the 600 block of Park Avenue.
  • Someone stole about $12 in change from an unlocked BMW parked in the 1700 block of Forest Avenue during the night of Oct. 11 or morning of Oct. 12.
  • During the night of Oct. 11 or morning of Oct. 12, someone stole a coin purse containing an apartment key and student ID from an unlocked Hyundai parked in the 1500 block of Greenwood Avene.
  • During the night of Oct. 12 or morning of Oct. 13, someone got into an unlocked Subaru parked in the 900 block of Oakwood Avenue and stole a computer and retail membership card for an unspecified loss.
  • Someone burglarized an unlocked Mercedes in the 200 block of Central Park Avenue during the night of Oct. 12 or morning of Oct. 13, but nothing was reported stolen.
  • Someone stole a wallet and credit card from inside an unlocked Mercedes parked in the 1200 block of Isabella Street during the night of Oct. 11 or morning of Oct. 12. The next day, the resident learned that purchases had been made with the stolen card.
  • During the night of Oct. 13 or morning of Oct. 14, someone burglarized an unlocked Hyundai and an unlocked Volkswagen while they were parked in the 3200 block of Sprucewood Avenue. Nothing was reported stolen from the Hyundai, but a backpack, tennis racket and two necklaces were stolen from the VW.

ARRESTS

Christopher K. Mason, 23, of the 6200 block of South Talman Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 5 a.m. on Oct. 1 and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a Chicago 17-year-old following his arrested in the 600 block of Forest Avenue in Wilmette. Officers spotted an empty Volvo that had been reported stolen from Chicago with a gun and ammunition in the car and shell casings outside the car. Police found Mason and the teen nearby and used a police dog to connect them to the stolen vehicle. Mason had the key to the stolen car in his pocket at the time of the arrest. The teen was charged in juvenile court with burglary, possession of ammunition without a FOID and criminal trespassing to a motor vehicle.

A 21-year-old Skokie man was arrested around 1:45 a.m. on Oct. 1 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater after a traffic crash in the 2000 block of Lake Avenue. He was also issued citations for uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane usage.

An 18-year-old Skokie man was arrested around 11 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the 1400 block of Sheridan Road and charged with driving under the influence of drugs.

A 28-year-old Aurora man was arrested around 11 p.m. on Oct. 5 in the 500 block of Greenwood Avenue, Kenilworth, after an officer pulled him over for a cell phone violation and determined his license was suspended, he did not have insurance, he smelled of alcohol and he had an active arrest warrant for failure to appear in Kane County Circuit Court. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license. Officers also cited him for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and use of an electronic communication device while driving.

A 30-year-old Des Plaines man was arrested around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after officers spotted him asleep behind the wheel of a white Nissan with its lights on at a closed business in the 3500 block of Lake Avenue.

Sean M. Pegues, 26, of the 8400 block of South Colfax Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 3 a.m. on Oct. 15 and charged with one count of burglary and one count of theft of less than $500. He is accused of stealing a black Harro bike from a front porch in the 3100 block of Country Lane around 4:45 a.m. on Oct. 14 and was identified by police the following morning as a suspect from a previous report of a car burglary. Officers also found evidence linking him to the thefts in his backpack. He was held for court due to his probation status stemming from a previous Wilmette burglary case.

A 51-year-old Wilmette woman was arrested around 12:15 a.m. on Oct. 15 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 following a two-car crash in the 3200 block of Lake Avenue. Officers determined the woman, who was driving a 2022 Jeep Wrangler, was at fault and took her into custody.

Kentrell Jones, 28, of the 800 block of West 103rd Street, Chicago, and Terrance Harris, 29, of the 7800 block of South Essex Street, Chicago, were arrested around 10 p.m. on Oct. 15 in Forest Park with a Volkswagen SUV belonging to a Laurel Avenue resident. The Wilmette resident at that point learned their car had been stolen. Jones was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle while Harris was charged with criminal trespass to vehicle.
