NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

FRAUD
A Brentwood Drive resident reported on Aug. 24 that someone had used their identity to open a Spirit Airlines credit card, although no charges were made.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE

A resident in 400 block of Adams Avenue reported on Aug. 28 that someone stole a license plate from a Jeep.

THEFT
Someone stole three garbage bins from the driveway of a home in the 500 block of Orchard Lane.

LOST JEWELRY
A resident in the 200 block of Lincoln Drive reported on Sept. 6 that they had lost nearly $62,000 worth of jewelry, which they believed was lost when clothes were donated on June 3.

BIKE THEFTS

  • Someone stole an olive green Liv bicycle worth nearly $500 after it was left unlocked on the side of a home in the 200 block of Vernon Avenue.
  • An unlocked Trek bike of unspecified value was stolen when it was left unlocked at a bike rack in the 300 block of Woodlawn Avenue between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone stole a wallet containing $400 from the center console of a victim's Ford SUV on Aug. 25 while it was parked at the Skokie Country Club, 500 Washington Ave. The resident later received fraud alerts from Bank of America.
  • Someone stole a change purse from inside an unlocked Honda around 3 a.m. on Sept. 4 in an incident that was captured on surveillance video.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Grove Street resident reported on Aug. 23 that a fraudulent check had had been mailed from the IRS for $58,000.
  • A Hazel Avenue resident reported on Aug. 24 that someone had used their identity to apply for a credit card.
  • A Jefferson Avenue resident reported on Aug. 26 that someone had used their identity to open a credit card in their name.
  • A Greenwood Avenue resident reported on Aug. 28 that someone had used their identity to open an American Express account.
  • A Woodlawn Avenue resident reported on Sept. 14 that someone had opened a pair of credit cards using their identity.
  • A Madison Avenue resident reported on Sept. 16 that someone had opened a credit card using their identity.
  • A Strawberry Hill Drive resident reported on Sept. 18 that someone had used their identity to open a credit card account.
  • A Forest Avenue resident reported on Sept. 19 that someone had used their identity to open a credit card account.
  • A South Avenue resident reported on Sept. 19 that someone had stolen more than $3,000 worth of airline miles.
  • A Madison Avenue resident reported on Sept. 20 that someone had used their identity to open a credit card account.
  • An Old Green Bay Road resident reported on Sept. 23 that someone had opened a credit card using their identity.

ARRESTS

A 45-year-old Highland Park man was arrested on Aug. 30 and charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop near the intersection of Dundee Road and Skokie Ridge Drive. He was also issued a citation for improper parking on the roadway.

A 52-year-old New Orleans man was arrested near the intersection Sheridan and Palos roads on an out-of-state warrant following a check of wellbeing.

A 64-year-old Palatine man was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 12 and charged with theft for allegedly streaking money from a tip jar on April 30 at an unspecified location.

A 53-year-old McKinney, Texas man was arrested around 3 a.m. on Sept. 21 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after found him parked in the lot of a closed business in the 2100 block of Frontage Road.

A 20-year-old Chicago man turned himself in on Sept. 21 to face charges of fleeing and eluding and driving without a valid license on Sept. 16, when he allegedly refused to stop for an officer who tried to pull over his Jeep on Sheridan Road. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage, speeding and fleeing and eluding.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

VANDALISM
Someone spray painted multiple street and village signs in the first block of Essex Road between 1 and 6 a.m. on Aug. 24 for a loss of about $400.

PACKAGE THEFT
A resident in the 600 block of Winnetka Avenue reported that someone stole a package worth about $170 after it had been delivered to an unlocked lobby in the 600 block of Winnetka Avenue.

SHOPLIFTING
Someone stole $164 worth of merchandise from Valentina, 538 Chestnut St., at some point prior to 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 20.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE
A resident in the 100 block of Merrill Street reported that someone stole a catalytic converter from their Pontiac between 5 p.m. Aug 31 and noon on Sept. 1 for a $1,800 loss.

BURGLARY
Someone stole donated items from a storage area in the 700 block of Oak Street between 4:30 and 5 p.m. on Sept. 7.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone got into a locked home in the 1300 block of Westmoor Trail between 6 and 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 2. The burglars stole an unspecified amount of jewelry worth at least $5,000.

CHECK FRAUD

  • A Pine Street resident reported on Aug. 28 that someone had intercepted and altered a mailed check for an unspecified loss of at least $5,000.
  • An Indian Hill resident reported on Sept. 11 that someone had intercepted and altered a mailed check for a loss of about $4,150.
  • A Maple Hill resident reported on Sept. 11 that someone had intercepted and altered a mailed check for a $1,000 loss.
  • A Sunview Lane resident reported on Sept. 12 that someone intercepted and altered a check between May 1 and May 24 for a loss of $381.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Cherry Street resident reported on Aug. 25 that someone had used their identity to open a cell phone account some time in the prior two weeks for a loss of about $1,020.
  • A Merrill Street resident reported on Sept. 19 that someone had used their identity to open up a bank account.
  • A Cherry Street resident reported on Sept. 7 that someone had used their identity to get a United credit card.
  • A Cherry Street resident reported on Sept. 7 that someone had used their identity to make unauthorized transactions using the resident's Charles Schwab account. The unspecified loss was at least $5,000.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone burglarized an unlocked Jeep parked in a driveway in the 1400 block of Scott Avenue between midnight and 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 4, but nothing appeared to be removed.
  • Someone burglarized an unlocked Toyota and Mercedes parked in the driveway of a home in the 1400 block of Asbury Avenue, but nothing was reported stolen from within.

ARRESTS

A 55-year-old Chicago man was arrested on an unspecified in-state warrant following a traffic stop around 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 20 in the 500 block of Hibbard Road.

Alexander R. Hurlbutt, 37, of the 6500 block of Sheridan Road, Chicago, was arrested on Sept. 12 around Sandy Lane and Wilmette avenue and charged with burglary.

A 26-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 1 a.m. on Sept. 16 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage, illegal transportation of cannabis and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol.

A 52-year-old Northbrook man was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 2 in the 100 block of charged with possession of a controlled substance following a call for a check of wellbeing in the 100 block of Linden Street. The man also had an active in-state arrest warrant.


NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

FRAUD ATTEMPT
A Latrobe Avenue resident reported on Aug. 24 that someone had called them on Aug. 23 and claimed to be an employee of a fraud protection agency. The caller claimed that the resident's bank account had been compromised and would transfer money to China unless a payment of $7,500 in gift cards was provided. The resident became suspicious of the call and reported it to police instead of paying.

THEFT FROM BIKE
A Winnetka resident reported that someone had stolen several parts of their bicycle while it was locked up at New Trier High School's west campus, 7 S. Happ Road, for evening football games on Sept. 8.

CAR BURGLARY
A Northbrook resident reported on Sept. 20 that someone had burglarized their car while it was parked at the Northfield Park District Community Center, 401 Wagner Road, between 5 and 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 18. About $100 in cash was reportedly stolen from inside.

LEAF BLOWER DISPUTE
A homeowner in the 1700 block of Mt. Pleasant Street called police around 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 to report that their neighbor was using a leaf blower "too close to their property." Police spoke to the neighbor, who agreed to "keep their distance" from the caller's property.

COUNTERFEIT ATTEMPTS

  • Staff at the Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, reported around 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 that a woman had just tried to pay for merchandise with a counterfeit bill. After the manager confiscated the bill, she left the store.
  • On Sept. 8, an employee of the Sunset Ridge Shell station at 469 Sunset Ridge Road reported that two women or girls tried to use counterfeit cash there two days earlier.

ARRESTS

A 52-year-old Wheeling man and a 19-year-old Wheeling man were arrested on the morning of Aug. 29 and charged with battery in connection with an Aug. 27 incident in the parking lot behind Taco Nano, 1743 Orchard Lane, where police found someone had been punched in the face and kicked repeatedly while on the ground. Investigators believe the attack stemmed from an altercation between family members.

A 24-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 7:45 a.m. on Sept. 17 and charged with assault and resisting a peace officer following a complaint that he had assaulted an employee at the Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, and a brief struggle with arresting officers. Police had earlier been called to Blue Pearl Animal Hospital, 820 W. Frontage Road, for a report of a man who was creating an disturbance. It turned out the man left before police arrived and had not done anything illegal there.

KENILWORTH

INCIDENTS

STOLEN CAR
Between 6 p.m. on Sept. 3 and 7 a.m. on Sept. 4, someone stole a car parked in the driveway of a home in the 500 block of Kenilworth Avenue after it was left unlocked with a key fob inside. Kenilworth police located and had the car towed from Chicago while investigating its theft.


WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

CAR BURGLARY
After cutting a lock, someone got into a construction trailer and stole a laser receiver, two lasers and a compactor worth combined $7,000.

FRAUD
A resident in the 1700 block of Highland Avenue reported that someone had come to their some purporting to sell subscriptions to the Chicago Tribune on July 7. The resident cut a $80 check, which was later deposited, but it turned out the solicitor was a scammer who did not actually work for the newspaper.

THEFT OF UNATTENDED ITEM
Someone stole an unattended purse from the bathroom of the Jewel-Osco, 411 Green Bay Road, on Aug. 19. The purse had $100 in cash, an iPhone and a credit card, which someone later tried unsuccessfully to use at a local retailer.

BOMB THREAT
Shortly before 5 p.m. on Aug. 20, a Wilmette Public Library authority got a chat message through the website from someone claiming that there were bombs in "all Cook County libraries." Library officials closed the library less than 15 minutes early and searched the building without finding anything suspicious.

FRAUD
Two scammers showed up at the home of a resident in the 1200 block of Richmond Lane on July 13 and convinced the resident to pay more than $10,000 to do work on pavers. On July 18, the pair returned and said they needed to do more repairs that would cost more money and the resident forked over another $10,000. On July 20, the two people came back and convinced the resident to give them a credit card with which to buy building materials. Instead, they spent $18,000 on watches.

JEWELRY THEFT
A resident in the 600 block of Pine Street reported on Aug. 23 that someone had stolen about 3,000 worth of jewelry from their home.

STOLEN MILES
A Maple Avenue resident reported on Aug. 24 that someone had used 25,000 miles from their airline account to purchase a one-way ticket from Ohio to Jamaica.

SHOPLIFTING/ASSAULT
Three shoplifters stole about $200 worth of liquor from the Jewel-Osco, 411 Green Bay Road, around 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 29. One of them threw a can of ice tea at a manager but did not hit them.

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a gray Hummer from the 1900 block of Schiller Avenue at some point between July 13 and Aug. 16.

TICKET FRAUD
An Isabella Street resident reported on Sept. 5 that they had paid $300 to buy concert tickets through an internet reseller but never received the tickets.

HOME BURGLARIES

  • A resident in the 500 block of Leclaire Avenue reported that someone opened and closed their bedroom door around 8 p.m. on Aug. 18. The resident heard footsteps in their home before the power went off. Police learned a burglar had gotten in through an open window and an outdoor power supply box had been damaged, but there was nothing reported stolen from inside.
  • A resident in the 500 block of Forest Avenue reported on Aug. 27 that someone had come into their home through an open rear patio door and stole $50 in cash from their wallet.
  • Someone got into a home in the 800 block of Leclaire Avenue between 2 and 5 p.m. on Sept. 10, stealing jewelry from inside.
  • Between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 10, someone got into a home in the 800 block of Laramie Avenue and stole jewelry and cash from inside.

COMPUTER SCAMS

  • A Lamon Avenue resident reported on Aug. 22 that they called a series of phone numbers presented in a pop-up add that claimed their computer was hacked. Those phone calls allowed people to take over their computer. After realizing they were getting scammed, the resident turned the computer off.
  • On Sept. 13, a Skokie Boulevard resident responded to an email and was scammed into installing an app on their phone and providing their social security and driver's license number to the sender. The resident was also scammed into transferring an unspecified of money to the scammer.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Someone used a large masonry brick to shatter the rear window of a Crown Victoria in the 200 block of Hibbard Road on or before Sept. 10.
  • A resident in the 300 block of Kilpatrick Avenue reported on Sept. 10 that someone had slashed a tire on their Kia for a loss of $150.
  • Someone spray-painted a Chevy Van in the 2900 block of Greenleaf on or before Sept. 13.

BIKE THEFTS

  • Someone stole two unlocked bicycles from a property in the 1200 block of Elmwood Avenue on or before Sept. 4.
  • A locked bicycle worth $200 was stolen from the train station at 722 Green Bay Road on or before Sept. 6.
  • A e-bike worth $650 was stolen after it was left locked at the Linden CTA Purple Line station at 349 Linden Ave. on or before Sept. 6.
  • On Sept. 8, someone stole an unlocked bicycle from the 300 block of 3rd Street.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Sheridan Road resident reported on Aug. 18 that someone had used their identity to open a credit card, which was canceled before it was used.
  • A Locust Road resident reported on Aug. 21 that a collections agency notified them that someone had used their identity to open a line of credit and withdraw $230 on it.
  • An Old Glenview Road resident reported on Aug. 24 that someone had used their identity to open several credit cards without authorization.
  • A Birchwood Avenue resident reported on Aug. 25 that someone had used their identity to apply for an unauthorized loan from a bank.
  • Someone used the identity of a Leamington Avenue resident to open a cell phone and credit card account and purchase a cell phone on or before Sept. 3.
  • A Washington Avenue resident reported on Sept. 5 that they had received three debit cards in the mail that they had not applied for, and the accounts associated with the cards had not been used.
  • A 9th Street resident reported on Sept. 6 that someone had used their identity to unsuccessfully attempt to open a line of credit.
  • A Skokie Boulevard resident reported on Sept. 11 that someone had used their identity to accrue $500 in fraudulent charges to their credit card.
  • A Chestnut Avenue resident reported on Sept. 11 that someone had used their social security number to fraudulently fire for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • A Sunset Drive resident reported on Sept. 12 that someone had opened a cell phone account using their identity.
  • A Greenwood Avenue resident reported on Sept. 13 that someone had used their airline miles to buy two tickets without authorization.
  • A Lake Avenue resident reported on Sept. 13 that someone had used their identity to file for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • A Greenwood Avenue resident reported on Sept. 13 that they got an notification about a credit card account that they did not have.

ARRESTS

A 31-year-old Chicago man was charged with misdemeanor DUI and cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving without headlights following a traffic stop in the 1200 block of Forest Avenue around 1 a.m. on Aug. 19.

Soraya C. Weatherby, 60, of the 8800 block of South 55th Court, Oak Lawn, was arrested on Aug. 22 and charged with identity theft in connection with an investigation that launched in October 2022.

A 26-year-old Skokie woman was arrested on Aug. 23 after a co-worker at Big Blue Swim School, 3232 Lake Ave., reported six days earlier that she had been stealing from her, having allegedly taken a pair of sunglasses and $300 in cash.

A 54-year-old Dunkirk, Indiana, man was arrested around 10 a.m. on Aug. 23 after officers learned he had an extraditable arrest warrant issued by authorities in Indiana in connection with a parole violation.

Otearia O. Streeter, 33, of the 2030 block of East Pine Street in Springfield; Shakeita A. Jones, 36, of the 5900 block of West Fillmore Street in Chicago; and Antonio R. Ross, 35, of the 2000 block of East Edwards Street in Springfield, were all arrested around 4 p.m. on Aug. 26 after after Walgreens employees flagged down an officer at Edens Plaza and reported a shoplifting in progress. Police stopped the three arrestees in the parking lot in a rented white Nissan and learned they had stolen $1,117 in merchandise from the store and had another $1,200 in stolen Walgreens merchandise in the rented car, along with narcotics and brass knuckles. All three were charged with felony retail theft. The driver, Streeter, was also charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

A 28-year-old Wilmette man was arrested around 2:15 a.m. on Aug. 25 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 1700 block of Lake Avenue. He was also cited for no insurance, improper lane usage, driver's license not on person and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.

Nadashia Freeman, 23, of the 4700 block of West Monroe Street, Chicago, and Derrick Mitchell, 23, of the 6100 block of South Vernon Avenue, Chicago, were arrested around 8 p.m. on Sept. 6 after police were dispatched to a shoplifting in progress at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave. Police found the shoplifters in a black Nissan in the parking lot, with about $600 in stolen liquor. There was also about $185 worth of stolen items that had been discarded near the store entrance. Both were charged with retail theft and attempted retail theft. Freeman was also charged with possession of a stun gun without a FOID.
