Fake accountant scams resident out of $65,000; Wheeling man charged with battery at Starbucks: Winnetka-Glencoe-Northfield Police Blotters

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
GLENCOE
INCIDENTS
HOME BURGLARY
Police were called to the 800 block of Oak Drive around 5 p.m. on April 24 for a report of a home burglary. Someone spotted three men wearing black ski masks run out of a house and enter a black pickup truck that had backed into a driveway before fleeing the area at a high rate of of speed. When police arrived, they found the front door was open and several rooms had been ransacked.
CAR BURGLARY
Staff at the Mini of Glencoe, 2100 Frontage Road, reported on May 2 that someone had smashed out the passenger window of an orange Dodge Challenger.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Valley Road resident reported on May 14 that they had received a letter from the U.S. Small Business Administration about a loan for which they had never applied.
WIRE FRAUD
A Washington Avenue resident reported on May 29 that someone claiming to be their accountant had convinced them to wire $65,000. The scammer claimed that they were unable to complete a direct deposit from the bank to pay state taxes.

SHOPLIFTING
Police were called to Foodstuffs, 338 Park Ave., on May 31 for a report that someone had stolen a bottle of wine. The suspected thief, who was still there when officers arrived, was banned from the store but no charges were filed.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Skokie Ridge Drive resident reported on June 3 that they had gotten an email confirmation from a rental car company for an agreement that they had never made. There were no fraudulent charges discovered on the resident's accounts at the time of the report.
FIREWORKS COMPLAINT
Police mistook fireworks being set off at Lakefront Park on June 3 for the sound of gunshots.
THEFT OF BIKE PARTS
Someone stole a black wire basket from a locked bicycle parked at the train station, 724 Old Green Bay Road, on June 3.
FRAUD
A Woodlawn Avenue resident reported on June 4 that a wire transfer to a bank had failed to go through. Regions Bank was unsure where the money went, and the resident reported a loss of $12,500.
STOLEN BIKE
Someone stole a child's bicycle on June 4 after it was left unlocked at the bike racks at Central School, 620 Greenwood Ave., for a loss of $716.
ARRESTS
Marius Caldare, 51, of an unspecified address, was taken into custody around 11 a.m. on April 24 on two warrants issued by authorities in Texas in connection allegations of credit card fraud following an encounter with public safety officers near the intersection of Lake Cook Road and the Edens Expressway.
Anayancy Ventura, 24, of Niles, and Arturo Barrera, 21, of Glenview, were arrested after police were called to a report of a dispute at Lakefront Park. When they arrived they found an intoxicated woman trying to drive a car with children inside. Ventura was charged with endangering the health of a child and Barrera was taken into custody on a warrant issued by Cook County authorities for his failure to appear in court.
A 50-year-old Lake Forest man was arrested around 10:30 p.m. on May 1 and charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol and ticketed for running a stop sign following a traffic stop near Sunset Lane and Vernon Avenue.
A 36-year-old Wheeling man was arrested on May 9 at the Starbucks, 347 Park Ave., and issued citations for battery and disorderly conduct.
Casey Marshall, 32, of the 300 block of South Avenue, Glencoe, was arrested on May 10 near the intersection of Old Green Bay Road and South Avenue on an outstanding arrest warrant issued by Lake County authorities for failure to appear in court.
WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
RETAIL THEFT
Someone stole about $557 worth of merchandise from The Grand Food Center, 606 Green Bay Road, around 1:30 p.m. on May 10, police were told.
FORGERY
Someone tried to negotiate three forged checks using account information from a BMO Harris account in the 500 block of Green Bay Road shortly before 11 a.m. on May 13.
BIKE THEFT
Someone stole a locked bicycle worth $630 after it was left at a rack at New Trier High School, 385 Winnetka Ave., from 7:15 a.m. May 10 to 6:30 p.m. May 12.
STOLEN CAR
Someone stole an unlocked Audi from the driveway of a home in the 1400 block of Asbury Avenue shortly before 3:30 a.m. on May 21. The stolen car also contained golf clubs.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
An officer discovered that someone had caused $500 in damage to a wooden sign post in the 700 block of Sheridan Road between 1 and 2 a.m. on May 26.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Spruce Street resident reported on that someone intercepted, altered and cashed a check for an unspecified loss in excess of several thousand dollars at some point between April 22 and May 2.
- An Oak Street resident reported on May 4 that they had discovered on April 30 that someone had used their identity to apply for multiple credit cards.
- A Rosewood Avenue resident reported that someone used their identity to apply for a loan with the U.S. Small Business Administration sometime after July 2022 for an unspecified loss greater than several thousand dollars.
CAR BURGLARIES
- Someone stole identification and credit cards from an unlocked BMW parked in a driveway in the 1200 block of Lindenwood Drive. The cards were later used to in unauthorized purchase attempts.
- Someone got into a pair of unlocked Chevrolets in the driveway of a home in the 900 block of Tower Road between 9 p.m. on May 26 and 8:15 a.m. on May 27, but nothing was reported stolen from within.

ARRESTS
A 50-year-old Winnetka man was arrested around 9 p.m. on April 30 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 1100 block of Sheridan Road. He was also ticketed for improper lane usage and illegal stopping.
A 54-year-old Winnetka man was arrested around 12:30 p.m. on May 4 and charged with retail theft at the Walgreens, 925 Green Bay Road, after police were called to investigate a report of someone leaving the store without paying for merchandise.
A 42-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 2:15 a.m. on May 12 and charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of no valid driver's license. Police also cited him for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver and illegal stopping.
A 24-year-old Winnetka woman was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on May 20 and charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop near the intersection of Linden and Ash streets. She was also issued a citation for improper lane usage.
A 27-year-old Winnetka man was arrested around 1 p.m. on May 23 in the 700 block of Elm Street and charged with domestic battery.
A 53-year-old Jupiter, Florida woman was arrested around 5:15 p.m. on May 25 and charged with driving under the influence of drugs following an encounter with police in the 200 block of Sheridan Road.
A 51-year-old Winnetka man was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on May 27 and charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop at Provident Avenue and Elm Street. Officers also issued him citations for running a stop sign and improper lane usage.
A 48-year-old Gurnee man was arrested around 3:30 a.m. on June 2 and charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol following an encounter with police at Carleton Washburne School, 515 Hibbard Road.
NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
LANDSCAPING DISPUTE
Officers were dispatched around noon on May 1 to the 2100 block of Old Willow Road for a dispute between residents over landscaping. Village Building Department staff found no violations.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO VEHICLE
A car window was shattered while it was parked in an office building lot in the 100 block of Waukegan Road on May 15. Nothing was reported stolen from inside.
GARAGE BURGLARY
Numerous items worth an estimated $10,00 were stolen from an attached garage in the first block of The Landmark on May 17.
MOTORIST DISPUTE
Officers responded to a heated disagreement between motorists over road rules on Winnetka Road on May 23. Police explained the rules of the road to both drivers.
UNWANTED SUBJECT
Officers responded to New Trier High School’s west campus, 7 S. Happ Road, on May 25 over reports that an ice cream truck driver refused to leave school grounds after staff told him he was not allowed to sell merchandise. The driver was warned he could be charged with trespassing if he returned.
DISORDERLY CONDUCT
Officers responded to a civil dispute between neighbors in the 1700 block of Northfield Square on May 26. One was concerned about the "aggressive actions" of the other, and police reported they provided advice on handling the matter.
ANIMAL FOUND
A resident of the 300 block of Crook Creek Lane reported on May 26 that a stray brown and white cat had been living in the area for the past week. Officers secured the cat, which will be held at the Glencoe Animal Hospital.
ORDINANCE VIOLATION
A resident was found burning a brush pile on May 30 in the 2100 block of Middlefork Road. The resident was warned about the village ordinance prohibiting open burns.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE TO PROPERTY
Damage to an exterior door was reported on May 31 by a resident of the 1700 block of Northfield Square.
AGGRAVATED FLEEING AND ELUDING
On June 1, an officer tried to pull over a speeding black Dodge Charger on Willow Road at Bracken Lane. The driver fled at high speed, and police later found the car and its license plate had been stolen.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Thornwood Lane resident reported on May 7 that someone had accessed an online account and committed four fraudulent transactions.
- A West Frontage Road resident reported on May 18 that unknown person(s) may have remotely accessed her phone and committed fraudulent transactions.
- A resident of the 2000 block of Middlefork Road reported on May 31 that someone had gained unauthorized access to an online account and purchased several flights.
SUSPICIOUS INCIDENTS
- A resident of the 200 block of Thackeray Lane reported on May 10 that they may have been being watched and followed by someone in a vehicle at Clarkson Park.
- Security at Fields BMW, 700 W. Frontage Road, reported on May 12 that a couple had picked up a car without providing proof of ownership other than a key.
- A resident reported on May 15 that a package of gift cards worth approximately $800 that had been mailed from the Northfield Post Office never arrived.
- A resident in the 1700 block of Northfield Square reported on May 30 that someone had been knocking at their door in the late evening over the past few days. Police reported they pledged to maintain extra watch over the area.
ARRESTS
A 71-year-old Northfield woman was arrested around 9 p.m. May 3 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after she crashed into another car in the 800 block of North Happ Road. She was also issued citations for failure to reduce speed and operation of an uninsured vehicle.
