New Trier Custodian Charged After Fight Among Employees: Blotter
Financial exploitation of the elderly arrest and fake boss, tech support and concert ticket scam reports: New Trier Township Police Blotters

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
GLENCOE
INCIDENTS
A resident in the 500 block of Park Avenue reported on Feb. 6 that they had paid a home repair shop $8,900 to install a garage door, windows and carpet but the company never completed the work.
ELECTRONIC HARASSMENT
A Hohfelder Road resident reported that someone used a photo from their social media account to create a new account on Instagram.

FRAUD
An Edgebrook Lane resident reported on Feb. 16 that someone had made three unauthorized charges on their credit card for a loss of less than $142.
ARRESTS
Darius Edwards, 31, of the 6900 block of South Harvard Avenue, Chicago, was arrested on Feb. 8 and charged with deceptive practices, retail theft and forgery following an investigation into counterfeit cash used at Parkway Drugs, 335 Park Ave., and at Starbucks, 341 Park Ave., to purchase gift cards.

Peter Songanyi, 35, of the 6400 block of North Leavitt Street, Chicago, was arrested on Feb. 10 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop near the intersection of Forestway Drive and Tower Road. He was also issued citations for illegal transportation of alcohol by a driver and improper lane usage.
May Absin, 31, of the 4400 block of North Kimball Avenue, Chicago, was arrested on Feb. 13 at Everleigh Vernon Hills, 555 Lakeview Parkway, and charged with financial exploitation of an elderly person for more than $300.
WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
TICKET SCAM
A Foxdale Avenue resident reported they sent $1,300 to someone who claimed to be selling concert tickets on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21, but the tickets had not been provided as of Jan. 31.
THEFT/COUNTERFEIT
Someone used an unspecified amount of counterfeit currency at Peet's Coffee, 817 Elm St., around 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 7 and removed about $5 worth of merchandise from the store.
TECH SUPPORT SCAM
A Garland Avenue resident reported around 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 8 that someone claiming to be Apple tech support had made about $1,000 in unauthorized transactions using their Venmo account.
THEFT
At some point between 4:11 and 4:23 p.m. on Feb. 10, someone stole a bag containing a wallet, passport, cash and travel cards from the 7-Eleven, 88 Green Bay Road, later making unauthorized purchases on the card.
TRESPASING
Someone entered a locked home in the 1100 block of Spruce Street between 1 p.m. Feb. 12 and 11 a.m. on Feb. 15 but did not appear to have taken anything.
CHECK FRAUD
- A Pine Tree Lane resident reported on Feb. 7 that, at some point between Nov. 3 and Nov. 9, someone had altered a check that had been mailed.
- A De Windt Road resident reported that someone had altered checks in the mail for an unspecified loss in excess of several thousand dollars at some point between Feb. 9 and Feb. 13.
- On Feb. 16, a Gordon Terrace resident reported that someone had altered a check on Jan. 15 for an unspecified loss in excess of several thousand dollars.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Locust Road resident reported on Jan. 29 that someone had used their identity to fill out a 1099 IRS form to work for Uber between January and August of last year.
- A Pine Tree Lane resident reported on Feb. 3 that someone had used their identity to apply for credit and order a credit card reader between Jan. 6 and Feb. 3.
- A Pine Tree Lane resident reported on Feb. 7 that someone had used their identity on Feb. 5 to make an unauthorized purchase for a loss of more than $2,355.
- A Birch Street resident reported on Feb. 12 that someone had used their identity to make $2,000 worth of unauthorized transactions using their BMO Harris checking account on Feb. 9.
- A Forest Glen Drive resident reported on Feb. 12 that someone had used their identity to open up multiple credit card accounts at some point in the prior 10 days.

Prowlers got into 18 unlocked cars in Winnetka on the night of Feb. 12 or early morning hours of Feb. 13.
- Unlocked Volkswagen and Kia — 900 block of Forest Glen Drive East — between 5 p.m. Feb. 12 and 1:53 a.m. on Feb. 13
- Unlocked Porsche — 1100 block of Asbury Avenue — between 11 p.m. Feb. 12 and 3:35 a.m. on Feb. 13
- Unlocked Hyundai — 1200 block of Scott Avenue — between 2 p.m. Feb. 12 and 4:13 a.m. on Feb. 13
- Unlocked Jeeps — 1200 block of Scott Avenue — between 8 p.m. Feb. 12 and 8 a.m. Feb. 13
- Unlocked Mini Cooper — 1200 block of Asbury Avenue — between 6:50 p.m. Feb. 12 and 9 a.m. Feb. 13. (Laptop stolen and later found in Waukegan.)
- Unlocked Chevy — 1100 block of Asbury Avenue — around 1 a.m. Feb. 13 (Sunglasses valued at $300 stolen)
- Unlocked Toyota — 1100 block of Asbury Avenue — between 8 p.m. Feb. 12 and 4 a.m. Feb. 13.
- Unlocked Mini Cooper — 1100 block of Asbury Avenue — between 1 and 1:10 a.m. on Feb. 13.
- Unlocked Volvo and Izuzu — 800 block of Vernon Avenue — between 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 and 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 13.
- Unlocked Toyota — 800 block of Boal Parkway — around 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 13. (Bag of sports gear valued at $1,000 stolen)
- Unlocked BMW and VW — 1500 block of Tower Road — around 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 13.
- Unlocked BMW — 800 block of Boal Parkway — between 6 p.m. Feb. 12 and 7 a.m. Feb. 13 ($5 in cash stolen)
- Unlocked Land Rover and Honda — 1500 block of Tower Road — around 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 13.
ARRESTS
Mateusz Maria Michalski, 45, of the 4000 block of North Ottawa Avenue, Norridge, was arrested around 5 p.m. on Jan. 31 in the 400 block of Green Bay Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving while license revoked and also cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
Tyron Shelton, 22, of the 6800 block of South Wabash Avenue, Chicago, and Darvell Clark, 32, of the 4300 block of West Lexington St., Chicago, were both arrested and charged with retail theft following a call of theft of merchandise around 3 p.m. on Feb. 2 at 800 Elm St. Clark was also charged with possession of a controlled substance, while Shelton was also charged with a retail theft from Walgreens, 925 Green Bay Road, and processed at the Winnetka Police Department on an active arrest warrant from Lake County.
Derselegne Ayele, 46, of the 5400 block of Oakton Street, Morton Grove, was arrested for aggravated unlawful restraint and two counts of aggravated assault around 4:15 p.m. on Feb. 9 at New Trier Township High School, 385 Winnetka Ave., following an investigation into a report of an assault between employees. Ayele was removed from a list of custodial staff on the school's website following the incident.
NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
Staff at Fields BMW, 700 W. Frontage Road, reported a stolen license plate to police around 1 p.m. Jan. 31 after the business received multiple Illinois Tollway violation notices and bills from September 2023 to January 2024.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Latrobe Avenue resident reported on Feb. 1 that they had gotten tax documents from an unknown company falsely reporting numbers using his identity.
GIFT CARD SCAM
An Evanston resident reported on Feb. 5 that they had been scammed into buying gift cards by a phishing email that appeared to have come from their boss. The cards were frozen after police were contacted.
ASSAULT
Around 5 p.m. on Feb. 8, a customer at Sunset Ridge Shell, 469 Sunset Ridge Road, reported an someone assaulted the clerk and threatened violence. The attacker was detained but released without charges, as the clerk declined to sign a complaint but instead sought to ban him from the property.
DISTURBANCE
Officers were called to Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, around 10 p.m. Feb. 10 after a customer caused a disturbance at the self-checkout and fled the store. Management was reportedly undecided on whether they wanted police to investigate.
COMMERCIAL BURGLARIES
- A representative of Sunset Ridge Shell gas station, 469 Sunset Ridge Road, reported a someone broke in around 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 11 and tried, unsuccessfully, to steal the ATM.
- Someone got into Zengeler Cleaners, 310 S. Happ Road, during the night of Feb. 16 or early morning hours of Feb. 176. An unlocked door had allowed thieves to get inside and steal an unspecified amount of money.
SUSPICIOUS INCIDENTS
- Around 4:45 a.m., a Chicago resident reported being followed on the Edens Expressway to the Northfield Police station. The other car's driver reportedly asked strange questions, but police found no evidence of criminal activity.
- A representative of Temple Am Yisrael, 4 S. Happ Road, reported suspicious men or boys loitering on its property around 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 11. Police found no evidence of crimes.
- A resident of the 1600 block of Orchard Ln. reported a suspicious vehicle parked in an alley on Feb. 17 at 1:00 AM. Police found no issues.
