North Shore Public Libraries Close Doors Ahead Of Winter Storm

Libraries in Glencoe, Evanston, Northfield, Skokie, Wilmette and Winnetka will close to the public Thursday.

WINNETKA, IL — Public libraries are closing early on the North Shore in anticipation of an incoming arctic cold front.

Blizzard conditions, rapidly accumulating snow and whiteout conditions are expected to begin across the northern suburbs in early afternoon.

Libraries in Winnetka, Northfield, Glencoe, Wilmette and Evanston are closing early Thursday afternoon and will remain closed all day Friday.

The Skokie and Highland Park public libraries closed all day Thursday but are scheduled to reopen Friday.

The entire Chicago area is under a winter storm warning through 6 a.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service, most areas will see moderate snow, but travel is expected to be "treacherous" due to high winds and cold.

After undergoing "bombogenesis," the storm is expected to become what's known as a "bomb cyclone."

Barometric pressures fall during the rapid strengthening, and winds "rush in and swirl at high speeds around the storm's center," according to private forecaster AccuWeather.
