Northfield Woman Dies After Being Hit By SUV, Driver Ticketed: Police

NORTHFIELD, IL — A Northfield woman died after a motorist hit her with a car Monday as she walked in a crosswalk near her home, authorities said.

Jeanne Dechovitz, 82, was struck around 3:30 p.m. as she walked across the southern driveway of the Northfield Village Center driveway, according to the Northfield Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said a 49-year-old Winnetka woman behind the wheel of a black Mercedes SUV failed to check the crosswalk to her right before pulling out toward Happ Road and struck Dechovitz, knocking her to the ground and causing her to hit her head.

The Northfield Fire-Rescue Department took Dechovitz, who lived nearby on Northfield Square, to Evanston Hospital for treatment from her injuries. Dechovitz was pronounced dead around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the medical examiner's office, which had not officially determined the cause or manner of her death as of Friday morning.

The driver was ticketed for failure to yield to a pedestrian and expired registration. She is due to appear in court in Skokie on Sept. 16.
