Victim Declines To Press Charges Against Jewelry Thief: Blotter

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
GLENCOE
INCIDENTS
DISORDERLY CONDUCT
Around 3 a.m. on Jan. 26, officers were dispatched to an address that did not exist in the 300 block of Lakeside Terrace for a report of an unspecified incident. Police determined that it was a false 911 call.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Crescent Drive resident reported that they received a call from BMO Harris bank on the afternoon of Jan. 27 to notify the resident that someone had tired to access their bank account information using their identity.

WIRE FRAUD
An Oak Drive resident got an email from Walmart on the morning of Jan. 29 about an unauthorized purchase of $63.13. The resident disputed the charge with their card company and canceled the card.
STOLEN PACKAGES
Someone stole a pair of packages delivered by an online retailer to the 400 block of Green Bay Road prior to 10:45 a.m. on Feb. 1. The packages contained a dog bed and an Apple pen valued at a combined $70.

INCIDENTS
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Hill Terrace resident reported on Jan. 23 that someone had intercepted a check, altered it and cashed it for an unspecified loss greater than $5,000 sometime in the prior 10 days.
- A Chestnut Street resident reported on Jan. 24 that someone had altered a check that had been mailed previously and cashed it for a loss of approximately $3,700 on Dec. 27.
THEFTS
- A Green Bay Road resident reported on Jan. 25 that a scammer purporting to be their friend had convinced them to buy a $200 electronic gift card and send the money to an unknown recipient.
- Someone stole the street signs at the corner of Oak Street and Sheridan Road at some point between 11:41 Jan. 28 and midnight on Jan. 29 for a loss of $360.
NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
A resident in the 300 block of Lockwood Avenue reported around 11 a.m. on Jan. 30 that they had noticed about $10,000 worth of jewelry had gone missing from their home in the prior month. Detectives identified the thief, tracked down the stolen jewelry and returned it to its owner, but the resident declined to press charges.
FRAUD
A Longmeadow Road resident reported on Feb. 2 that they had been scammed into giving access to their cell phone after calling a purported Facebook Support phone number for assistance. The scammer took control of the resident's phone and tried to make an unauthorized purchase, but the resident got suspicious and hung up. Police reported all unauthorized transactions were denied.

There were no incidents or arrests reported by the Kenilworth Police Department since Jan. 27.
WILMETTE
INCIDENTS
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident reported on Jan. 29 that someone had damaged string lights in their backyard.
ROAD RAGE
A motorist at Plaza Del Lago, 1515 Sheridan Road, reported that another driver spit on their car and yelled at them as a result of a "traffic altercation."
IDENTITY THEFT
A Wood Court resident reported on Jan. 25 that someone had used their identity to file a fraudulent tax return in another, unspecified state.
SHOPLIFTING
- Police were called to the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., around 6 p.m. on Jan. 28 for a report of shoplifting in progress after a man or boy spotted putting items into a bag inside the store fled when approached by an employee. The thief dropped the stolen goods, got into a waiting getaway car and fled onto the expressway.
- Staff at the Jewel-Osco, 1517 Sheridan Road, reported that someone stole unspecified alcohol from the store on or before Jan. 31. The thief returned the store but left after being confronted by an employee and a customer.
HOME BURGLARIES
- Someone broke into a home in the 100 block of Millbrook Lane at some point on Feb. 2. It was not known how much was stolen at the time of the report, but police said a side door had been forced open and the interior of the home was ransacked.
- A resident in the 300 block of LeClaire Avenue reported that someone broke into their home at some point on Feb. 2 and stole jewelry, coins, silverware and identification documents from inside.
STOLEN CARS
- A shopper at Edens Plaza, 3232 Lake Ave., who left a key fob inside their car retuned to the parking lot around 2:30 p.m. to find someone had stolen their car.
- Someone stole a car from a driveway in the 600 block of Prairie Avenue on or before Jan. 31 after a key fob was left inside.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Mckesha D. Daniels, 26, of the 1400 block of South Lawndale Avenue, Chicago, and an accomplice under the age of 18, were arrested shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 27 after officers were called to the Jewel-Osco at 3232 Lake Ave. for a report of shoplifting in progress. Police arrived to find two people on the sidewalk carrying about $500 in stolen merchandise and arrested them both, charging Daniels with misdemeanor retail theft and petitioning her companion delinquent in juvenile court.
Daniel C. Spence, 31, of the 400 block of Central Ave., Wilmette, was arrested around 9 p.m. on Jan. 28 and charged with criminal trespassing to property and disorderly conduct after police were called to a house in the 400 block of Washington Avenue for a report of an unknown person inside. No one was inside when police arrived, but they followed footprints in the snow, which led them to Spence's house, where he was arrested.
