The Winnetka Women’s Golf Club (WWGC) celebrates two major milestones this summer: the 75th anniversary of the club and the 50th anniversary of member Carolyn Weinstein’s tenure with the women’s 18-hole league.

On July 17, 45 women hit the tees at 8:00 a.m. for 18-holes of golf. The staff of Winnetka Golf Club, including Head Golf Professional Cortney Miller and Superintendant Henry Michna, who create a top-quality, comfortable atmosphere every Tuesday for the women’s league, were on hand assisting with a bag drop and the sending off of carts to each hole for the shotgun start.

Following a beautiful and sunny morning on the course, the golfers were joined by a number of former members for a luncheon in the for a luncheon where long drives and successful putts were recounted and celebrated, along with years of friendship, fun, and fitness.

Fifty-year member Carolyn Weinstein was in attendance for golf and the luncheon. Weinstein joined the WWGC in 1962, because she wanted to play in a golf group once her children had started school. Not only was the course close to her home, but it was familiar to her. Weinstein had played at the Winnetka Golf Club course when she was a sophomore at New Trier High School.

But, Weinstein says the group of women the WWGC attracts is the main reason why she has remained a member for 50 years.

“It’s such a pleasant, diverse group of women. It’s a wonderful group to be part of. And, over the years, being in the women’s league sure has helped my game!” she said.

Weinstein stills plays almost every Tuesday morning with the WWGC. The league’s 74 members are divided into three flights by handicap, and compete within flights in weekly events ranging from common competitions such as low net, skins, or best ball, to events that emphasize fun over competition, such as “three clubs and a putter.” A 9-hole women’s league also is offered by the Winnetka Golf Club.

The WWGC draws its members from Chicago and 13 suburbs. The diversity of the clubhas been important to Weinstein.

“Friends kept joining country clubs and my husband I thought about joining one, too. But, we stayed at the Winnetka Golf Club because we liked the diversity of the group. In the women’s league, we have women of different ages, and from different areas,” Weinstein said.

League members are honoring Weinstein’s 50-year membership with a special luncheon in August, and the planting of a tree on the golf course, accompanied by a commemorative plaque.

Women interested in playing golf on a beautiful public course and making new friends are invited to join the WWGC for the rest of the 2012 season, or to look for information about the 2013 season in the Winnetka Park District’s spring publications.
