Fireworks Complaints Increase Amid 4th Of July: Woodridge Police

WOODRIDGE, IL — With the holiday weekend upon us, the Woodridge Police Department wants to reminds residents of the dangers of illegal fireworks use as there's a sudden wave of fireworks exploding in cities across the country, including Woodridge. The Woodridge Police Department told patch that officers have already responded to 10 complaints related to fireworks since June 22, and according to the American Pyrotechnics Association, backyard firework use is expected to hit an all-time high this Independence Day

New York City is seeing a 2,000 percent increase in fireworks-related calls compared to that same period last year, according to the APA.

The police department said that while they understand people are disappointed due to the cancellation of many fireworks shows amid the coronavirus pandemic, illegal fireworks are a serious and dangerous issue, and can scare babies, kids and pets. The police department added that the sound can keep people awake at night, and people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experience real harm from fireworks, and can be reminded of traumatic events.

The police department asks you to call 911 to report the use of illegal fireworks.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, few people understand the risks related to fireworks, despite the dangers that come with them. The risks include fires, "devastating" burns, death, and other injuries, according to the NFPA.
