Virtual Reality System To Train Woodridge Cops For Real-Life Scenarios
Woodridge police will use the Operator XR System to simulate real-world scenarios and help with training.

WOODRIDGE, IL — Woodridge police have recently added a virtual reality (VR) system to its training tool kit. With the Operator XR System, officers can experience simulated real-world scenarios that "will significantly enhance their preparedness and decision-making skills," Chief Tom Stefanson said in a statement.
With the Operator XR System, officers wear lightweight headgear that immerses them in a 360-degree virtual setting. Officers can engage with programmed scenarios or navigate customizable settings and scenarios.
Scenarios may include traffic stops, high-stress encounters or active shooter incidents. The programs help officers train in de-escalation, use of force, crisis intervention and community behavior.

During the VR sessions, trainees can use their personal equipment or be equipped with "precise replicas," which can help them develop "essential muscle memory," a news release said.
“In 2023, we proactively explored innovative training solutions in response to evolving legislative requirements and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Stefanson explained. “This initiative aligns with the Illinois SAFE-T Act, the De-Escalation Training Act of 2022, and our commitment to continuous improvement. Investing in VR technology demonstrates our dedication to staying at the cutting edge of modern policing practices.”
