3 Indiana State Students Dead, 2 Seriously Hurt After Overnight Crash: Police
Several of those involved in the crash were football players, according to the school.
TERRE HAUTE, IN — Three Indiana State University students are dead and two are injured following an overnight crash, according to authorities, who reported several of those involved in the incident were football players at the school.
The crash occurred about 1:30 a.m. Sunday on State Road 46 at Main Street in Riley, Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse reported. The students’ vehicle left the road and hit a tree, and was on fire when deputies arrived, according to Plasse, who said the two people who survived were seriously injured. The driver and two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, Plasse reported.
"This is a terrible tragedy," ISU President Deborah Curtis said in a post on the school’s athletics website, which noted police were working Sunday to identify those who died. "As we are waiting on additional details from authorities investigating this accident, our hearts go out to the families and friends of the students involved."

A women’s soccer match set for Sunday afternoon at the university’s Memorial Stadium was postponed, according to the post.
“Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to the families and all who were involved in this tragic accident,” Indiana State Football said in a tweet.

Counseling has been made available to students, faculty and staff, according to the post.
“Please pray for the families and friends of these young men, this university, and the men and coaches in this program,” Mike Bath, one of the football team’s coaches, said in a tweet.
