More Suspects Possible In Delphi Killings, Prosecutor Says: Reports

"Our client is the wrong guy," an attorney for defendant Richard M. Allen told WTHR, calling the case's sealed affidavit "flimsy."

DELPHI, IN — A prosecutor suggested Tuesday that 50-year-old Richard M. Allen, of Delphi, may not be the only person suspected in the 2017 killing of 13-year-old Abigail Williams and 14-year-old Liberty “Libby” German, according to reports.

The prosecution has reason to believe Allen did not act alone, WTHR reported.

“It is in the best interest of the public to find anybody else involved,” Prosecutor Nicholas McLeland said, as quoted by The Journal & Courier, when Allen appeared in court Tuesday.

McLeland’s words align with statements he made last month after Allen was arrested, when the prosecutor said not to assume anything and that investigators would keep the tip line open for the case.

The bodies of Abigail Williams and Libby German were found Feb. 14, 2017, after they disappeared a day earlier, having gone hiking on the Delphi Historic Trails. The girls were last seen near the Monon High Bridge, and their bodies were found about a half-mile from the bridge, police said.

Allen’s lawyer, publicly appointed defense attorney Bradley Rozzi, accused McLeland on Tuesday of “conjecture,” according to the newspaper.

“Our client is the wrong guy,” Andrew Baldwin, another lawyer for the defense, told WTHR, calling the affidavit, which is sealed to the public, “flimsy.”

Members of the media Monday formally requested a judge grant public access to the affidavit and charging information, according to court records. The prosecution Tuesday filed a motion asking to prohibit attorneys, police and others connected to the investigation from speaking or releasing information about the case, court records said. Judge Frances Gull has taken both matters under advisement, according to court records.

Details of the case have been sealed since Allen, identified by WTHR as a licensed pharmacy technician who worked at a local CVS, was arrested late last month.

“Will the public interest be substantially served by limiting access?” Rozzi asked, according to The Journal & Courier, noting the motion to seal the documents lacked verification. “No.”

Allen has asked that his bail be reduced or that he be released on recognizance, according to WTHR, which reported that a request to relocate Allen to a state facility was approved Tuesday.
