• Purdue University Northwest invites community to join 2026 MLK Day events (wimsradio.com) — Purdue University Northwest is inviting Hammond residents to free 2026 MLK Day events, including a Jan. 15 celebration on the Hammond campus at Alumni Hall, 2200 169th St. That program features alumnus and law professor Shontrai Irving speaking on justice and civic engagement, while a second event in Westville on Jan. 19 offers breakfast, music, and a keynote focused on community leadership.

• ICE drafts warehouse network to detain 80,000 immigrants: Report (san.com) — Hammond is being considered as a site for a massive new ICE detention warehouse that could hold up to 9,000 migrants, part of a proposed national network of “mega-facilities.” The draft plan, not yet finalized, aims to speed deportations by funneling detainees from smaller processing centers into a few huge hubs, raising local concerns elsewhere about zoning, infrastructure, staffing, and humane conditions.
