Construction on a new $5.4 million United Way community center, which will bring child care and health services to South Bend’s southeast side, will begin next month, the nonprofit announced Monday, August 30.

Groundbreaking for the Southeast Neighborhood Center, at the corner of Dubail and Fellows streets, is scheduled for Sept. 28, with an estimated completion date of July 2022.The center will be the first of its kind in Michiana to bring health care, child care and social services together under one roof.
The neighborhood center was announced two years ago and the nonprofit originally hoped to begin construction in the fall of 2020 after raising around $4.2 million. However, the nonprofit shifted its fundraising efforts toward COVID-19 aid last year and construction costs rose

Once completed, the Southeast Neighborhood Center will offer a variety of programs to Michiana residents, most of which will be run by third-party organizations. Head Start will offer child care for kids six weeks to 6 years old, while Healthy U Pharmacy will have a physician in the new center and will partner with AIDS Ministries to run a pharmacy in the space..
