3 Campers Killed In Iowa State Park: Police

A fourth camper was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound near Maquoketa Caves State Park, Iowa authorities said.

MAQUOKETA, IA — Three people were killed and a fourth person appeared to have shot himself in the area of an Iowa state park, according to police.

Law enforcement was notified about 6:30 a.m. Friday of a triple homicide at the Maquoketa Caves State Park campground, according to Iowa's Division of Criminal Investigation.

Officers found three bodies, however, a fourth camper — 23-year-old Anthony Orlando Sherwin — was unaccounted for, police said. Sherwin’s body was eventually discovered west of the park, according to police, who said he appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

There is no danger to the public, police said, but Maquoketa Caves State Park remains an active crime scene and is closed until further notice. Camp Shalom, a nearby Christian camp, evacuated campers and staff upon learning of the incident Friday morning, according to a Facebook post from the camp.

Maquoketa Caves State Park comprises large bluffs and about 13 caves, with a 6-mile trail system.

"I, as well as the DNR staff, am devastated for the families impacted by the tragic incident at Maquoketa Caves State Park," Kayla Lyon, director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, said in a prepared statement.

"Our long-standing tradition of enjoying Iowa's natural wonders was shaken today, but the legacy for the millions of families that recreate at lowa State Parks will continue. This heartbreaking incident hits home for the DNR family; not only as people who are passionate about getting folks outside, but as people who regularly camp with our families at these same parks. We appreciate the collaborative work between local law enforcement, the Department of Public Safety and the DNR State Parks staff and conservation officers on this investigation."

The park is located in eastern Iowa, roughly 25 miles from the Illinois state line at Bellevue and 30 miles from Dubuque.

"I’m horrified by the shooting this morning at Maquoketa Caves State Park and devastated by the loss of three innocent lives," Gov. Kim Reynolds said in a tweet. "As we grieve this unimaginable tragedy, Kevin and I pray for the victims’ family members and the law enforcement officers who responded to the scene."
