The Ames Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 11:19 p.m. on Monday (February 28) at 417 12th Street. A passerby reported seeing flames inside the home through a window and called 911. Ames Fire crews arrived on scene to flames and smoke coming from a window of the home.

Fire crews made entry into the home to search for occupants and extinguish the fire. During their search, a cat was found and safely removed from the fire. No other occupants were home at the time of the fire. Ames Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish and contain the fire to the room of origin.

The cat was treated at the scene with oxygen and then transported by Ames Police to the Iowa State University Small Animal Hospital for observation. The house sustained smoke damage throughout, with heat and fire damage confined to the room of origin. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.
