Public Intoxication, Possession of Marijuana Among Charges in Ames Police Blotter

Ames Police Blotter Sept. 28 to Sept. 30.

Seven people were charged with public intoxication and three others were charged with public consumption over the weekend in Ames.

At least some of those charges likely stem from activity surrounding Iowa State University's home football game held 6 p.m. Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium.

Ames Police CMDR. Jim Robinson said the department typically sees an increase in those types of charges during home games in part because of the sheer influx of people.

More people are in town so there are more calls for service, he said. And some see the games as excuses to drink more, which can cause problems.

The upcoming football game may or may not have played a role in charges filed against a resident at 119 Stanton Ave. early Saturday.

The night before the football game, Ames police were alerted to a possible party after people began throwing beer bottles from a high rise apartment balcony in Campustown, reports said.

Police knocked on the apartment door for about 10 minutes before someone opened the door, complaints said. One of the residents, Taylor Smith, told police they had no right to be there and walked into the hallway and closed the door behind him, complaints said. Another man ran inside the apartment while Smith spoke to the officer and Smith reportedly blocked the officer's path trying to prevent the officer from stepping inside the apartment, complaints said.

The officer could smell an odor of burnt marijuana in the apartment and requested a search warrant before searching the apartment and finding a small amount of a green leafy substance thought to be marijuana and paraphernalia in a bag in Smith's bedroom, complaints said. Smith was charged with interference with official acts, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
