Brace For Possible Thunderstorm Tonight in Cedar Falls

The National Weather Service says a thunderstorm is possible, but severe weather is not expected.

It may seem a little early in the year for thunderstorms, but nothing seems out of the ordinary this strange winter.

The National Weather Service is predicting possibly a thunderstorm tonight, as part of its hazardous weather outlook and wind advisory. Rain is expected before midnight, then rain likely and possibly a thunderstorm between midnight and 3 a.m. Wind gusts could reach 29 miles per hour for the Cedar Falls area. 

The chance of precipitation is estimated at 100 percent, and total rainfall could total three quarters of an inch.

"We are getting into the spring season. This is when we start seeing thunderstorms," said David Sheets, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Davenport.

Sheets said severe storms are not expected, but there is a low probability of hail and wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour. Further west in Southwest Iowa, Nebraska and Western Missouri, there is a greater probability of severe weather.

On Wednesday, there is a 60 percent chance of snow and wind gusts up to 43 miles per hour. Less than a half inch of snow is possible. Thursday is supposed to be partly sunny, and more snow could be in the picture on Friday.
