Update: Cedar Falls Officials OK Downtown Redevelopment Project

City officials will consider a redevelopment plan that includes renovating the old Broom Factory site into townhomes.

Update:

Cedar Falls City Council unanimously approved plans for major redevelopment in downtown this week.

The plan will convert the old Broom Factory site and State Street into the trail head for a river trail, will add hundreds of housing units, a hotel, retail and office space and additional parking. The proejct is expected to cost millions of dollars and get tax breaks.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that no one spoke during the special meeting, which lasted less than four minutes.

Cedar Falls officials have called a special meeting this afternoon to consider plans for redevelopment that includes turning the old Broom Factory site into townhomes and would transform part of State Street.

As part of the meeting, City Council will vote on entering into a contract with River Place Properties LC, and also consider plans for the Western Homes Communities addition, which would place at the old Broom Factory site.

The Western Homes project is part of the larger River Walk redevelopment.

The River Walk redevelopment is slated to include a hotel, mixed use space for events, business and retail, a parking ramp and upscale apartments, among other features, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports.

The Western Homes project may cost $18 million-plus, and developers are looking at more than $25 million for building construction, according to the Courier.
