Education Waiver Input Sought From Public in Cedar Falls
Iowa plans to request a waiver from requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act.
Iowa Department of Education leaders want to meet with community members in a visit to Area Education Agency 267 in Cedar Falls Jan. 31 to discuss plans to request a waiver from requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act.
The Department will present details about Iowa’s waiver request, some of which are discussed in the above video by Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass. They will also discuss plans to develop a new accountability system that puts student achievement first but also focuses on student growth and assessments that align with the Iowa Core standards.
Cedar Falls will be the first of nine such meetings statewide. The Cedar Falls meeting times are: 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., administrators and board members; 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., students; 4 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., teachers; 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m, parents/community members, supplemental educational services providers, and community organizations/business/board members.

In September, the U.S. Dept. of Education announced states would be allowed to apply for flexibility from specific requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act.
Iowans who are unable to attend the public meetings can submit comments in writing to wilma.gajdel@iowa.gov until 4 p.m. on Feb. 1.
