Fiscal Cliff Deal Reached: How Did Braley, Grassley, Harkin Vote?

The fiscal cliff was averted, but if you want more political bickering, wait for two months when the debt ceiling will have to be raised again.


There was a lot of drama, but the U.S. Congress actually succeeded in passing something to end 2012, a compromise to avoid the fiscal cliff and extend the farm bill.

Iowa had two of only eight total senators voting no against the deal. With Sen. Tom Harkin, a top-ranking Democrat, opining that the White House had ceded too much ground, and Sen. Chuck Grassley, a top-ranking Republican, calling the deal "a fiscal farce" that does not do enough to deal in his view to curb America's spending.

Also important to Iowa, dairy and wind credits were extended. For now.

For his part, this district's U.S. Congressman, Democrat Bruce Braley, issued a statement in support of the bill, which he voted for.

"Like all Americans, Iowans want Congress to come together to begin addressing the big challenges facing our country," he said. "This bill gives us a chance to prove that Congress is up to the challenge.”
