This Week in Cedar Falls Weather: Like the Man Said, A Hard Rain is Gonna Fall

"You know what?" I found myself thinking, as I was enjoying a leisurely Sunday walk. "That grass is looking pretty green. I bet it will be long enough to mow with just a good week of rain. I sure hope that doesn't happen..."

The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities is predicting a 60 percent chance of rain and potential thundershowers going into the overnight hours from Monday into Tuesday. That raises to 80 percent chance of rain Tuesday and 90 percent chance overnight into Wednesday:

• Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 4pm. High near 59. Northeast wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
• Tuesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 1am and 4am, then showers after 4am. Low around 43. Breezy, with a northeast wind 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

The chance of rain continues into Wednesday and Thursday, where dropping temperatures may cause a rain and snow mix beginning Wednesday night. I am going to pretend I just didn't see that:

•  Wednesday: Rain. High near 44. Breezy, with a northeast wind 14 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

• Wednesday Night: Rain and sleet likely before 1am, then snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 30. Blustery. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
• Thursday: A chance of snow before 10am, then a chance of rain and snow between 10am and 1pm, then a chance of rain after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
• Thursday Night: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

The precipitation could continue through the weekend:

• Saturday A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 48.
• Saturday Night A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38.
• Sunday A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 58. Breezy.

So maybe I won't have to mow next weekend after all: as it'll still be raining. Or snowing.
