UNI Gallery of Art to Present New Iowa Exhibit, "The Power of Line"

The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present "The Power of Line: Prints of the European and American Etching Revival from the University of Iowa Museum of Art," from Monday, Sept. 30, through Monday, Dec. 2, in the Kamerick Art Building (KAB) South on the UNI campus.

The exhibition was co-curated by Dr. Joni Kinsey of the University of Iowa School of Art & Art History in conjunction with her students and UIMA Chief Curator Kathleen A. Edwards. Gallery doors will open after Dr. Kinsey’s lecture on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in KAB 111, and a reception will follow.

The exhibition was made possible by the University of Iowa Museum of Art Legacies for Iowa Collections Sharing Program and supported exclusively by The Matthew Bucksbaum Family. The UNI Gallery of Art is proud to participate in this collections sharing initiative, which allows the campus community and art patrons in the region an opportunity to see important works from UIMA’s holdings.

According to Edwards, "The exhibition presents many fine examples of late 19th and early 20th century technical experimentation, intellectual inquiry and aesthetic expression, including maritime and landscape subjects and scenes of everyday life." Of the 43 works included in the exhibition are the following: "The Forge" by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, "An Apple Orchard, Easthampton" by Thomas Moran, and "Battersea Reach/Old Chelsea, Our of Whistler’s Window" by Francis Seymour Hayden.

In addition to "The Power of Line," the UNI Gallery of Art will also continue to present the UNI Permanent Art Collection exhibition titled "Myth & Narrative: It's All in the Telling," which was co-curated by Dr. Charles M. Adelman and gallery director Darrell Taylor. This exhibition represents an ongoing collaboration between the Gallery and upper-level art history students who have written didactic materials for each object. Featured works are by Romare Bearden, Salvador Dali, Honoré Daumier, Reuben Nakian and Gladys Nilsson.

All events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday; noon to 5 p.m., Friday through Saturday; and by appointment. The gallery will be closed November 23 through December 1 for the Thanksgiving Break.
