Veterans Day Activities and What's Open and What's Closed on Veterans Day in Cedar Falls

Veterans Day is on Sunday, Nov. 11, but is being observed by many on Monday, Nov. 12. Here are a few Veteran's Day activities going on around the Cedar Valley.

Veterans Day is Sunday. For most, observations will be on Monday, Nov. 12.

One event going on Sunday is the Veteran's Art Day event. This is from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Hearst Center for the Arts. Activities include printmaking, painting, ceramics and drawing.

Cedar Falls city services and hours of operation are normal on Monday.

University of Northern Iowa has several things going on as well.

  • Thursday, Nov. 8, veterans, student volunteers and UNI faculty will tie yellow ribbons around trees on campus to commemorate veterans. Those who wish to participate in the ribbon tying should meet at 5 p.m., Nov. 8, in front of the Maucker Union.
  • On Friday, Nov. 9, volunteers will be handing out flags throughout the day for students to stake in the field west of the Campanile.
  • On Friday, a flag ceremony will take place at 12:45 p.m., in front of the West Gym. The ceremony will feature speeches from a UNI student veteran and faculty member. It will also feature a National Roll Call, in which the names of veterans and current armed forces members at UNI will be called and a moment of reflection will take place.
  • On Friday, a reception for the opening of the new Military and Veteran Student Services Center will follow the ceremony at 1:15 p.m. in the Innovative Teaching and Technology Center. Terry Hogan, vice president for student affairs, and Leslie Williams, dean of students, will speak at the reception. Both the flag ceremony and the reception are open to the public.
  • Throughout the week, students will be in Maucker Union handing out yellow ribbon lapel pins in honor of Veterans Day. There will also be a Wall of Honor in Maucker Union, on which students and faculty can post pictures of veterans and leave special messages.
