Winter Storm Bearing Down On Cedar Falls

Black Hawk County is under a Winter Storm Warning starting at midnight Thursday.


Mother Nature seems to be trying to make up for lost time.

Following close on the heels of this morning's windchill advisory, Black Hawk County is among several counties under a winter storm warning, starting Friday at 3 a.m. and lasting until 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service out of Des Moines issued the warning Thursday. The warning said heavy snow is expected to start in Northwest Iowa after midnight, reaching Northeast Iowa by sunrise. The heaviest snowfall will be during the day Friday, with five to seven inches of snowfall expected.

The has asked for the public's assistance in moving cars off city streets during and immediately following the storm to facilitate plowing.

Winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour are forecast along with the snow, which could lead to minor blowing and drifting snow with reduced visibility. Travel tomorrow could be hazardous. The warning recommends avoiding travel except in an emergency. Those traveling should be sure to have an extra flashlight, food and water in their car in case of an emergency.

Though the windchill advisory has been lifted, wind chills for the rest of today could still be ten degrees below or lower. The wind chill is expected to stay below zero degrees Fahrenheit Friday.
