Last year, volunteers logged more than 3,300 hours on environmental clean-up projects to assist the City's Stormwater Division in its efforts to keep watersheds and waterways open, thereby reducing flood risk in the community. The volunteers' efforts are summarized in the Stormwater Division's latest Waterways Report, which recapped 2012 projects with photos and summaries of creek, river and wetlands clean-ups, removal of invasive species that choke out native plants in local prairies and along waterways, and other projects. The report is posted on the City's website at www.icgov.org/stormwater.

Volunteers represented all facets of the Iowa City community, including students from elementary school through college age, Scouts and other groups, retirees, church members, Hope House residents, employees from local businesses, and members of the National Guard. The value of the volunteer service is estimated at over $53,000.

Spring clean-up events are already being planned. Events are usually scheduled on the weekends to allow greater participation, and require about three hours of time. For more information on how to volunteer, visit the City of Iowa City Stormwater Volunteer Opportunities page on Facebook, or contact Carol Sweeting, Public Works Volunteer Coordinator, at 319.356.5164 or carol-sweeting@iowa-city.org.
