Iowa City man accused of assaulting protected party outside Johnson County courthouse (1630kcjj.com) — An Iowa City resident has been charged after deputies say a protected party in a no-contact order was assaulted outside the Johnson County Courthouse in downtown Iowa City. Authorities report the confrontation began after he approached a vehicle and escalated until deputies intervened, leaving the other man with abrasions. The suspect now faces multiple misdemeanor charges and potential jail time.
   

2. Historical Society reaches deal with University of Iowa to offer access to Iowa City research materials (thegazette.com) — Public access to State Historical Society materials from the now-closing Iowa City Research Center will continue through a new loan-style agreement with the University of Iowa’s Special Collections. While a lawsuit over the center’s closure and a possible law change are still pending, residents will be able to request select documents starting Jan. 1 during weekday reading room hours.
   

3. Suspect allegedly crashes his car into his house while being chased by Iowa City Police (1630kcjj.com) — Iowa City residents may notice police activity Friday after officers say a driver fleeing a traffic stop on Muscatine Avenue crashed into his own Crescent Street home and was arrested inside. Police report finding drugs and a handgun in the vehicle and residence, and the 37-year-old suspect now faces a long list of felony and misdemeanor charges that could bring decades in prison.
   

4. Iowa public school enrollment drops as private schools gain students (kcrg.com) — New state enrollment figures show Iowa City schools lost about 10 percent of their certified enrollment to private schools through education savings account vouchers this year. Public school numbers are down statewide while private schools grow, with nearly all private students using ESAs. The shift highlights how the statewide voucher program is reshaping local school enrollment patterns.
   

5. Penn State wrestling breaks Oklahoma State's Division I record for most consecutive dual matches won (psu.edu) — Iowa City gets a brief nod in national wrestling news, as Penn State’s last dual loss came there against Iowa back in January 2020. Since that defeat, the Nittany Lions have rattled off 77 straight dual wins, breaking Oklahoma State’s long-standing Division I record and tying the overall NCAA dual streak mark for Divisions I and II.
