Along with 24 custom-framed photographs, hundreds of photos will be displayed through a video stream cycled to audio tracks of performers from the Englert’s centennial season. The Englert will host an opening reception and artist talk as part of the Mission Creek Festival on Friday, April 5th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, with refreshments and appetizers provided by Clinton Street Social Club. During this talk, Sandy will discuss her process, answer audience questions, and share the unique experiences she had while working on this project.

A closing reception will also be held at the end of the exhibit on Friday, April 26th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, during which patrons can select from any of the 24 custom-framed prints to purchase. All of the proceeds from the art sale will be donated to support the continuation of the Englert’s mission of bringing high-quality entertainment to downtown Iowa City.

This is the theater’s second artist commission project, the first being the Iowa City Song Project which featured 31 musicians writing and recording songs inspired by Iowa City. Veteran photographer Sandy Dyas spent a year in The Englert Theatre during its centennial, documenting the inner workings and happenings of the downtown Iowa City presenting arts organization. The resulting exhibit brings to life this historic space, its staff, and, most importantly, the wonderful performers who grace its stage.

The exhibit includes several photographs of Mission Creek Festival 2012 artists who performed at the Englert, including The Magnetic Fields, David Cross, and Seun Kuti, as well as additional concert and backstage photography specifically chosen for this exhibit. Support for the exhibit, artist talk, and closing reception is provided by Clinton Street Social Club and Hudson River Gallery Framing. The Douglas & Linda Paul Gallery is located on the second floor of the historic Englert Theatre.

The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 12 to 6pm, and during select performances. For more information, call (319) 688-2653 or visit englert.org.
