Fire Investigator: Devastating Iowa City Fire Caused by Discarded 'Smoking Materials'
The Iowa City Fire Department has concluded that a fire that consumed a home on H Street last week was caused by discarded smoking materials. An estimated $150,000 was caused by the fire.

The cause of an Iowa City fire that ripped through a home on H Street last Monday has been determined.
According to an Iowa City Fire Department media release, at 11:38 p.m. last Monday, firefighters were dispatched to 1811 H Street on Iowa City's east side for the report of a residential structure fire.
Fire investigators have completed the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire that occurred there and concluded that it was caused accidentally by the careless disposal of "smoking materials" in a downstairs bedroom. The fire, triggered by the smouldering ashes, originated when a fire in a waste basket ignited nearby combustibles and quickly spread through the structure.Â
A properly installed and functioning smoke alarm is credited with providing early notification of the fire, according to the release, enabling the residents of the home to escape. One of the residents of the home suffered injuries and was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.Â
