Iowa City Fire Department Announces Promotions, Hiring of New Firefighter
There are some new ranks and a new name at the Iowa City Fire Department to close out the year.

Iowa City Fire Chief Andrew J. Rocca is pleased to announce the following promotions and the hiring of a new Firefighter: Captain Greg Tinnes, Lieutenant Bryan Hardin, and Firefighter Benjamin Caskey. The promotions and new hire were necessitated by the retirement of Captain Larry Kahler.Β
Benjamin Caskey was hired by the City of Iowa City for the position of Firefighter on November 5, 2012. Caskey completed his six-week orientation period on December 21, 2012. He has been assigned to Shift A at Station 1 on December 27, 2012, at 0700 hours. In his new assignment, Firefighter Caskey will perform fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, code enforcement, and public education duties.Β
Firefighter Caskey has been employed by the Johnson County Ambulance Service since 2007, after completing his Paramedic certification through the EMS Learning Resources Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He will complete Firefighter I & II and Haz-Mat Operations certifications in the coming year.Β
Bryan Hardin, a nine year veteran of the Iowa City Fire Department, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, effective December 18, 2012. Lieutenant Hardin previously served nine years as a Firefighter. He graduated with a Master of Business Administration degree in Public Administration from Columbia Southern University. Lieutenant Hardin holds certificates in Fire Fighter I and II, Fire Officer II, Hazmat Technician, Instructor II, and Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic.
In his current assignment as Lieutenant, Hardin will be in charge of a three-person engine company at Station 2 on Shift B, starting January 3, 2013. Lieutenant Hardin will be responding to emergency incidents, performing commercial building inspections, code enforcement, conducting company training, and maintaining logs and special activity records.
Greg Tinnes, a 16+ year veteran of the Iowa City Fire Department, was promoted to Captain on December 14, 2012. He graduated from Columbia Southern University with a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science. Captain Tinnes holds certificates in Fire Fighter II, Instructor II, Fire Officer II, Fire Inspector, Paramedic, Driver/Operator, and Arson Investigator.Β
In his current assignment as Captain, he will be in charge of a three-person truck company at Station 1 on Shift B, responding to emergency incidents, performing commercial building inspections and code enforcement, personnel training, and maintaining logs and special activity record.Β
