Iowa City Police Chief Finalist for Missouri Position

Iowa City police chief Sam Hargadine is a finalist for the same position in St. Charles, MO.

The search for a new police chief for St. Charles has narrowed to three candidates and is expected to wrap up before the end of the year. The city of St. Charles is a city of 65,000 people just Northwest of St. Louis.

Hargadine had worked for 20 years in the police department in Columbia, MO, including most recently as captain in 2005 before taking over as chief in Iowa City.

Final candidates include Larry Stulce, who is serving as interim police chief for St. Charles, Iowa City's Hargadine and Bloomington Police Chief Randall McKinley.

More than 45 people applied for the position, which was vacated in April.

"We've got three good candidates and the committee is meeting and we're evaluating and doing some normal HR processes and getting on with it," said Mayor Sally Faith. 

The city brought in the candidates for tours and interviews during the past two weeks. The search committee includes St. Charles County Sheriff Tom Neer, Tom Hughes, a St. Charles County builder and former police officer, council members Laurie Feldman and Ron Stivision, Director of Administration Michael Spurgeon, Faith and a representative from human resources.

The remaining council members and several police officers met the candidates during a social hour. 

Interim Chief Larry Stulce, who is among the candidates under consideration for the post, was hired on for a six month period which ends Nov. 15. 

Faith said she wants to have a new chief selected by the end of the year.
