Iowa City Police: Man Busted Through Door While Mother Held Infant, Dragged Both Outside, Told Mother: 'I Will Kill Your Whole Family'

The man is accused of being heavily intoxicated while make threats and physical acts of abuse toward the woman.


An Iowa City man is facing several charges after he allegedly physically abused the mother of his child while she was holding the baby and also threatened to kill her family.

According to an Iowa City Police criminal complaints, at 3:17 a.m. Monday morning to the 1400 BLOCK area of Plum Street for the report of an intoxicated man holding a child in a car seat while a woman attempted to wrestle the child away and secure it. In other reports, the officers said they had received calls about a man "shaking a baby in the street."

On arriving at the scene, officers observed a man, Alexis Stephen Kuberski, 32, of Iowa City, later identified as the father of the child arguing with the unidentified mother of the child, yelling at her and attempting to pry the child back from her.

After taking statements, officers determined that Kuberski had allegedly burst through the door where the mother was and dragged her out of the room by her left arm and down the hall while she held the baby in the carrier, according to the complaint. Kuberski then took the child and attempted to leave while the mother pursued to "ensure the safety of the child," according to the complaint.

The door where the argument had began was allegedly fractured open by Kuberski's shoulder, causing a splinter where the door latched that would not allow it to shut properly afterward.

Police said that during the argument the Kuberski told the woman "I will kill your whole family." A statement that worried the woman, according to police, as she did not know what Kurberski was capable of and feared his return after he was released from jail.

When encountered by police, Kuberski allegedly appeared intoxicated and had trouble speaking to officers. He also allegedly physically resisted as they attempted to put his hands behind his back to cuff him. Kuberski was convicted with alcohol offenses on Aug. 31, 2012, Oct. 19, 2012, and June 9, 2011. He was also charged with domestic abuse previously on June 29, 2012.

In total, Kuberski was charged with first-degree harassment for the threat, an aggravated misdemeanor; fifth-degree criminal mischief, a simple misdemeanor, for breaking the door; child endangerment with no injury, an aggravated misdmeanor; second-offense domestic abuse assault, a serious misdemeanor; habitual alcohol violation, an aggravated misdemeanor; and interference with official acts, a serious misdemeanor.

He currently is in the Johnson County Jail on $17,500 bond.
