Iowa City Police: Man Threatens to Kill Roommates with Knife, Broken Coffee Table Leg

According to police, the two roommates have requested protective orders against the man who the say becomes someone different when he is drunk.


An Iowa City man is facing a felony charge for allegedly threatening to kill his two roommates with a large knife and a broken leg of a coffee table that did not belong to him.

According to Iowa City Police complaints, Jose Domingo, 28, became intoxicated at 1:06 a.m. of Dec. 24 and got into altercation with his two roommates at their shared residence at 2401 Highway 6 East.

This then escalated and Domingo allegedly broke the leg off of the coffee table, using it to threaten one roommate, before going to retrieve a large knife from the kitchen. He then threatened both roommates with the knife, saying he would kill them slit their throats with it, according to the complaint.

Both roommates said that this is not the first time that something of this nature happened with Domingo, and they told police he becomes a different person when he is drunk. Both roommates said they are afraid of Domingo and requested protective orders against him.

As of Dec. 27, Domingo was still being held in the Johnson County Jail on a count of going armed with intent, a Class D Felony, and first-degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor. These two crimes together resulted in a $22,500 cash or surety bond. Domingo was also charged with fifth-degree criminal mischief, a simple misdemeanor, but this carries no bond amount with it.
