Iowa Women's Basketball Triumphs Over Miami Hurricanes

The Iowa Women were victorious in the first game in the NCAA tournament, winning 69-53 over Miami of Florida.


Carver Hawkeye Arena was home sweet home for the Iowa Hawkeyes Women's Basketball team Sunday night.

The Hawkeye women beat the Miami Hurricanes 69-53 in a game that started out sluggish but then broke for the Hawkeyes.

For once, Miami was the team turning the ball over -- and it cost the Hurricanes dearly.

Ninth-seeded Iowa solved Miami's aggressive defense during a strong second half and forced 24 turnovers in beating the eighth-seeded Hurricanes 69-53 Sunday night in a first-round NCAA tournament game.

Point guard Samantha Logic scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes (21-12), who had lost in the first round of the past two NCAA tournaments and now will play top-seeded Notre Dame on Tuesday night.

For their trouble the Iowa Hawkeyes get to take on number one seed Notre Dame, which dispatched the 16th seed Tennessee Martin squad 97-64. Tuesday's tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. central time.

But for now the Hawkeyes were able to savor getting out of the first round after some recent disappointments.

It was a great, special, amazing evening for the Hawkeyes on Sunday as they overcame a seven-point second half deficit to defeat Miami (Fla.) 69-53 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa improves to 21-12, Miami retires at 21-11. The victory snaps a string of three consecutive postseason losses for Iowa, which last won in the Big Dance against Rutgers in 2010.
