Dempster, a Grinnell native, died in his sleep Saturday in West Liberty following a short illness. He was 80.

“Keith was known as a guy who loved to tell stories,” longtime friend Marty Christensen said. “He would own a room; he had a big personality. He was very sweet and had a good sense of humor.”

Dempster, who served in the Army from 1952 to 1955, was a member of the Coralville VFW and the American Legion. He was a pioneer and lifelong member of the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America and founded the Pure Stodge Touring Association, a local charter of the club, in 1972.
