Iowa Men's Hoops Prepares for NIT Quarterfinal

On Tuesday afternoon, the team had another two-hour hour workout; mainly concentrating on the scouting report. UI assistant coach Kirk Speraw has the Cavalier scout and believes they are similar to Big Ten-foe Wisconsin.

"They are very patient and will work the offense a long time," said Speraw. "We are going to have to play great defense for the entire 35 seconds. We are going to have to get out and run, and attack before their defense gets set both on makes and misses. They are extremely sound in their offensive game; they run a lot of motion."

Speraw says the scout team, which learns the opposing team's offense and defensive sets, has done a good job preparing the team for the game.

Ken Pomeroy has a popular college basketball website (kenpom.com) and is one of the great numbers-crunchers of our basketball generation. His Pomeroy rankings carry a lot of weight with many.

In his most-recent ratings, Iowa is No. 23 and Virginia No. 25. They’re both ahead of three teams still standing in the NCAA tournament, including No. 93 Florida Gulf Coast.

Pomeroy tweeted this: Iowa-Virginia has to be one of the best NIT quarterfinals in decades.

Men: Hawkeyes, Cavaliers very much alike (Iowa City Press-Citizen)

Twenty-three wins on the season. Great at home, so-so on the road. An unselfish brand of basketball on offense. Solid defense. One of the last teams left out of the NCAA Tournament.

That sums up Virginia…and Iowa. Two teams that mirror each other square off at 6 p.m. Wednesday in an NIT quarterfinal game at John Paul Jones Arena. The winner gets a trip to Madison Square Garden in New York City and a date in the NIT semifinals April 2.

Virginia, 23-11, has won a school-record 20 games at home this season, and has the nation’s fourth-longest home-court winning streak at 19 games. Iowa, 23-12, was just 2-8 on the road this season.
