Open House at New Extension Center Tonight

The new Johnson County Extension Building is playing host to an open house tonight from 4 to 7 p.m.

The recently completed 12,000-square-foot facility is located at 3109 Old Highway 218 S in Iowa City. The building serves Iowa State University Extension - Johnson County. Extension services had outgrown the previous location, which was about one-third the size.

Refreshments and food will be served from 4 to 5:30 p.m.Β  A dedication program will start at 5 p.m. The agenda will include comments by U.S. David Loebsack, D-Iowa, Tracy Hightshoe and Steve Long for the Iowa City Development Commission, Iowa City Mayor Matt Hayek, and introductions and a welcome given by Extension Council Chair John Schneider.

Extension programs include 4-H, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Master Gardeners, after school and in-school science and nutrition programs, agriculture and natural resources, and families resource programs, among others. The building was built with funding provided by the Iowa City Community Development Block Grant program and corporate and individual donors.
