Panned Cy-Hawk Trophy To Be Scrapped

Officials say they are scrapping a new Cy-Hawk football trophy that generated so much negative buzz since it was unveiled last week that even Iowa's governor called for a "do-over."

Iowa and Iowa State will play for an "interim" trophy on Sept. 10 in Ames, officials from Iowa Corn Growers Association, University of Iowa and Iowa State University said during a news conference.

Meanwhile, the universities and Iowa Corn, which partnered on the new trophy, will go back to work on a new one that "fans will embrace."

"There's been no talk of not having a trophy in our discussions," said Steve Malchow, Iowa State associate athletic director Steve Malchow.

Iowa Corn CEO Craig Floss said fans will weigh-in on and vote on the next trophy. It's the fans decision, he said. He just asks for a little patience.

Floss added that the decision to re-do the trophy was made prior to Branstad's comments on Monday.

The panned trophy captured a farm family around a bushel of corn. It was to replace one that had been around since 1977, but it was so mocked that Facebook pages emerged, including a “HATE THE NEW CY-HAWK TROPHY” page.

Floss said he received an "overwhelming" amount of feedback and it was "overwhelmingly negative," and some were so offensive that he declined to read them aloud on Tuesday. Iowa associate athletic director Rick Klatt said he was offended some of the remarks.   

Floss did mention some suggestions for a new trophy, including one that features a Herky and Cy mascot or another that features Iowa legend Nile Kinnick and Iowa State icon Jack Trice.
