📰 News we're reading

1. Seventh Avenue reopens to vehicle and pedestrian traffic (1630kcjj.com) — Seventh Avenue is now fully open to cars between Muscatine and Rochester, restoring a key north-south route for Iowa City drivers and pedestrians. Temporary sidewalks and curb ramps at Court Street provide access to schools and transit, though Court Street itself remains local-traffic-only with sidewalks closed during ongoing reconstruction. Residents can track updates and future disruptions through the city’s project page.

2. Iowa City man charged with harassment (1630kcjj.com) — An Iowa City man from Rochester Avenue faces two harassment charges after police say he threatened to shoot two people and then himself during a January 2 argument. He was arrested on a warrant, booked into the Johnson County Jail, and both alleged victims have requested a no-contact order.

3. Iowa City Police investigating bank robbery (1630kcjj.com) — Iowa City Police are investigating a Friday morning bank robbery at Hills Bank on Muscatine Avenue and are asking residents for tips and security footage. If you saw anything suspicious or have cameras in the area, detectives want to hear from you. Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest, and tips can be submitted anonymously.

4. Cedar Rapids police release automated license plate data (cbs2iowa.com) — Cedar Rapids police are sharing how automated license plate readers helped them solve more than 400 cases in 2025, including tracking a suspect vehicle tied to a shooting incident investigated by Iowa City police near East College Street. The technology also helped locate a missing dementia patient and suspects in property crimes, with the department now releasing usage data every quarter.

5. Judge won't dismiss lawsuit over law requiring districts for supervisors in three Iowa counties (thegazette.com) — A Johnson County judge in Iowa City has refused to throw out a lawsuit challenging Iowa’s new law that forces Johnson, Black Hawk, and Story counties to elect supervisors by district instead of at-large. The judge also declined to pause the law, so Johnson County is moving ahead with redistricting, putting all five supervisor seats on the November ballot and assigning staggered terms by random draw on Jan. 14.
